Volleyball Wins First OAC Match Against Visiting Capital University

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University volleyball team opened Ohio Athletic Conference play with a match against Capital University at the Lou Higgins Center, inside Ursprung Gymnasium. BW (19-1 overall, 1-0 OAC) won the match in three straight sets.

The Yellow Jackets were led offensively by freshman outside hitter Mary Zurbrugg (Alliance), who tallied 14 kills -- at a .357 hitting percentage – to push BW to victory. Directing the offense for BW was senior setter Ashley Nuding (Perrysburg/Springfield), recording 24 assists. Sophomore setter Kathleen Egan (Cleveland/Beaumont) helped facilitate with 14 assists of her own. Freshman defensive specialist Morgan Martin (Seven Hills/Trinity) posted three service aces, a career best for her young career.

Anchoring the defense was sophomore defensive specialist Sarah Reinhard (Willoughby/South), accumulating 15 digs. BW defended the net well as six different Yellow Jackets recorded assisted blocks, amassing eight for the night. Sophomore middle hitter Taylor Brown (Maple Heights) and freshman utility player Morgan Mellinger (Akron/St. Vincent St. Mary) led the way with two blocks each.

BW will travel to Meadville, Pennsylvania on Saturday, September 29 to play in a non-conference tri-match with Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) University and host, Allegheny (Pa.) College. First match is at 1 p.m. against W&J and the Allegheny match will follow at 3 p.m.
