Five Women Tracksters Compete at “Last Chance” Meet

BEREA, OHIO – Five Baldwin-Wallace College women's indoor track and field participants competed today at the University of Mount Union's "Last Chance" Meet in the McPherson Academic & Athletic Complex. The meet is designed to give participants one more opportunity to qualify for next week's NCAA Division III National Championship Meet.

Senior Leslie Purnell (Sprinfield/ Catholic Central) and junior Cristina Perrine (Middleburg Heights/ Midpark) placed first and second, respectively, in the weight throw with tosses of 54'2.5" and 54'2", respectively. Perrine currently ranks 11th nationally with a season-best throw of 55'9.75" and Pernell is 16th at 55'2.75".

In the shot put, freshman Danielle Torrence (Canton/ South) busted off the best throw of the day with a season-best toss of 44'0.5" to rank 11th in Division III. Pernell also had a season-best toss with a throw of 43'10" and that ranks her 12th in Division III. Although Perrine only had a best of 40'6" at Mt. Union, she still ranks 23rd in Div. III with a top throw of 42'4.75"

In the high jump, sophomore Victoria Brown (Berlin Center/ Western Reserve) had a season-best leap of 5'4.5". That ties her for 30th in Division III this year.

In the women's five-event pentathlon, freshman Nicole Christner (Minerva) placed third with a season and career-best score of 2,942 points.  That ranks her 40th in Division III. She ran the 60-meter hurdles in 9.83 seconds for 744 points, long jumped 16'5.25" for 562 points, threw the shot put a season-best 33'8" for 546 points, high jumped a season-best 4'10.25" for 599 points and ran the 800 meters in 2:47.35 for 491 points.

The qualifiers to the 2012 NCAA Division III National Championship Meet will be announced tomorrow, Sunday, March 4, evening.

The 2012 NCAA Division III National Championship Meet will take place on Friday and Saturday, March 9-10 at Grinnell (Iowa) College.  In addition, the rest of the women's team members are either on Spring Break or beginning the 2012 outdoor season with a week of training. Next weekend, the women open the outdoor season by participating in the Coastal Carolina Invitational Meet.
