UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College women's track and field teams finished second at the 2012 Ohio Athletic Conference East Split Squad Meet today (Saturday, March 31) on Wasmer Field in the Don Shula Stadium at John Carroll University. This was the third outdoor meet of the spring for the Yellow Jackets.
The Yellow Jackets had five individual champions and captured one relay titles en route to scoring 166 total points.
Senior Leslie Purnell (Springfield/Catholic Central) finished first in the women's hammer throw with a throw of 147 feet and 4 inches. Freshman Danielle Torrence (Canton/South) and Purnell finished first and second respectively in the women's shot put. Torrence had a distance of 41 feet and Purnell 38 feet and 11 inches. Also finishing first and second were sprinters Kaylan Lemon (Canton /Massillon Perry) and Brittany Sterling (Lima) in the 100 meter dash. Lemon finished with a time of 12.7 seconds and Sterling crossed the line with a time of 13.11 seconds. Lemon also finished first the women's 200 meter dash in a time of 25.87. The 4x100 meter relay team of Sterling, Lemon, Lauren Nanni (Parma/Padua Franciscan) and Shaquella Greeno (Lima) were also victorious. They finished with a time of 49.37 seconds.
In addition, distance runner Shaina Kovatch (Parma/Valley Forge) placed first in the women's 5,000 meter run with a time of 18:28.54. Sophomore sprinter Nicole Smith (Geneva) finished second in the women's 200 meter dash and the 400 meter dash. Smith crossed the line in the 200 meter with a time of 26.81 seconds and the 400 meter with a time of 59.76 seconds.
The Yellow Jacket men and women are back in action next Saturday, April 7 when they travel to Delaware, Ohio to participate in the Annual Ohio Wesleyan University Marv Frye Meet. Field events begin at 10:00 a.m. and running events start at 12:30 p.m.
