BW Women Beat Allegheny (Pa.), 1-0, in Season Opener

ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA --  Freshman forward Cheryl Bell (Piqua) scored the winning goal and freshman goalie Emily Tallmadge (Fairview Park/ Fairview) provided a shutout in their first collegiate match as the Baldwin Wallace University women's soccer team defeated Allegheny (Pa.) College, 1-0, today (Saturday, September 1, 2012) in the first round of the season-opening Penn State Behrend University Herb Lauffer Memorial Tournament. The Yellow Jackets now play the host school tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 2 at 4:30 p.m.

BW, 1-0 overall, is coming off a  season which it compiled an 11-9 overall record and had its fifth season of 10 or more wins during the past seven seasons under the direction of veteran Head Coach Reid Ayers.  Allegheny is now 0-1 overall.

In the first half, Bell scored the only goal of the contest when she received an assist from junior forward Kari Trivisanno (Mentor).  The game was scoreless in the second half.

In the game, the Gators outshot the Yellow Jackets, 16-10, and outcornered BW, 2-1.

"This was an excellent start to the season," said 11-year veteran Head Coach Reid Ayers. "To have a pair of freshmen come up big was great to see.  We have a bunch of injuries to some of our key veterans and we needed to have some help.  Cheryl [Bell] and Emily [Tallmadge] certainly gave us a lift heading into tomorrow's match versus Penn State Behrend.  Good show."

BW next plays on Tuesday, September 4 when it travels to Oberlin to face traditional rival Oberlin College in a nonleague men's and women's doubleheader. The women play at 7:30 p.m. Next weekend, Friday and Saturday, Sept. 7-8, the BW women travel to play The College of Wooster on Friday at 11:00 a.m. and then play Earlham (Ind.)
