BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University women's soccer team upset No.21-ranked Ohio Northern University, 1-0, today (Saturday, October 6, 2012) in an Ohio Athletic Conference match on the Tressel Field pitch inside The George Finnie Stadium. The Yellow Jackets entered the game ranked ninth in this week's NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America) Great Lakes Region poll and the visiting Polar Bears were ranked second.
With its win, BW improves to 8-2-3 overall and 2-1 in the OAC with two straight wins. With its loss, ONU is now 6-2-3 overall and 1-2 in the OAC with two straight losses.
In the first half, BW gained a 1-0 lead at the 23:51 mark when junior defender Kayla Losco (Hopewell Twp., Pa./ Hopewell) sent a cornerkick in the penalty box. BW freshman forward Cheryl Bell (Piqua) got a head on the ball and it went off a pair of ONU defenders and into the net. The goal was Bell's fifth of the season and the assist was Losco's team-leading seventh. The game remained a 1-0 Yellow Jacket lead at halftime.
In the second half, ONU pressed the BW defense, but the Yellow Jackets kept the Polar Bears out of the net to secure the upset.
In net for the Yellow Jackets, freshman goalkeeper Emily Tallmadge (Fairview, Pa./ Fairview) faced eight Polar Bear shots, including two on-goal, allowed no goals and made two saves in 90 minutes of action. ONU senior goalkeeper Erin Waehner faced nine Yellow Jacket shots, including four on-goal, allowed one goal and made three saves in 90 minutes of action.
In the match, BW outshot ONU, 9-8, and won the corner kick battle, 4-3.
The Yellow Jacket women remain at home and play OAC-rival Heidelberg University on Tuesday, October 9 in the first game of a women's and men's OAC and SportsTime Ohio doubleheader at 4:30 p.m. The men's game will start at 6:30 p.m.
