Women's Soccer Team Falls To Capital, 2-0, In Quarterfinals Of OAC Tournament In Bexley

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace University women's soccer team was defeated by Ohio Athletic Conference foe  Capital University, 2-0, today (Monday, November 1, 2010) in the quarterfinals of the OAC Tournament in Bexley.
 

With the loss, B-W concludes its season with a record of 7-10-4 overall. With the victory, Capital improves to 11-5-4 overall and advances to face #2 seed Ohio Northern University in the semifinals on Wednesday, November 3 in Ada at 2:00 p.m..  In the other quarterfinals match,  #5 seed Wilmington College defeated #4 seed John Carroll University, 5-4 in penalty kicks  and will face #1 seed and #4 nationally ranked Otterbein University in the semifinals on Wednesday afternoon in Westerville at 2:00 p.m.


In the first half,  both teams battled to a scoreless tie.

In the second half, the Crusaders opened the scoring when Hillary Ells finished the cross to the center of the box from Holly Phillips at 63:21.  Just four minutes and four second later, Capital sealed the game and increased its lead to 2-0 when Ciara McCellan headed in the cross from Samantha Shaffer at 67.25.

Overall, B-W outshot Capital, 20-18, including a 14-10 advantage in the second half.  The Crusaders out cornered the Yellow Jackets 10-5.


In goal, senior
 Caitlin Sutter (Toledo/Sylvania Southview) faced 18 Capital shots and made a career-high 11 saves.  Sutter,  who took over in goal  after 10 games, ends the season with a record  3-5-4 overall with one shut out .

Despite the loss, the Yellow Jackets have a lot to look forward to as they will return their top six scorers all of whom are either freshmen or sophomores this season . B-W was led by the freshman duo of forwards
 Bucky Gammiere (Mentor/Lake Catholic) and Heather Keller (Parma/Senior) with 16 points.

Gammiere had a team-high eight goals while Keller netted seven goals and added two assists.  Sophomore Angie Wigton (Worthington/Worthington Christian) was third on the team with six goals, including two in the final regular season match that sent B-W to the OAC Tournament, and three assists for 15 points and freshman defender Lindsey Cooper (Westerville/New Albany) finished fourth with 13 points on four goals and five assists.

 Lindsey Mikula (Rocky River) had nine points on four goals and one assists to finish fifth while freshman midfielder Rachel Gokey (Seville/Cloverleaf) was sixth with two goals and three assists  for seven points.
