Women Beat Host SUNY-Fredonia, 3-1, at Fredonia Soccer Classic

BEREA, OHIO - Three separate players each tallied a goal as the Baldwin-Wallace College women's soccer team defeated host SUNY-Fredonia, 3-1, today (Friday, September 10, 2010) in the first tound of the SUNY-Fredonia Classic in Fredonia, New York.  The win was B-W's third straight and vaulted the Yellow Jackets into tomorrow's championship game versus the University of Rochester (N.Y.) at 2:30 p.m.

With the victory, the extremely young Yellow Jackets are now 3-2 overall and have beaten Penn State Behrend, Oberlin College and SUNY-Fredonia after beginning the season with two losses.  SUNY-Fredonia is now 2-2 overall.

The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring at the 43:38 mark when junior midfielder Lindsey Cooper (Westerville/ New Albany) scored her first career goal as a Yellow Jacket off a corner kick via an assist from freshmanRachel Gokey (Lodi/ Cloverleaf)The score remained 1-0 at the intermission.

In the second half, B-W quickly increased its lead to 2-0 at the 48:25 mark when sophomore midfielder Lindsey Mikula (Rocky River) scored an unassisted goal.  SUNY-Fredonia then cut the lead to 2-1 at the 77:10 mark. Undaunted, the Yellow Jackets regained their two-goal lead at the 81:28 mark when freshman Bucky Gammiere (Mentor/ Lake Catholic) scored her team-leading third goal of the season with an assist from freshman midfielder Heather Keller (Parma/ Senior).

In goal, freshman Tina Mathur (Mason) faced 28 SUNY-Fredonia shots, including seven on-goal, and was credited with six saves.  

SUNY-Fredonia outshot the Yellow Jackets, 28-16, and won the corner kick battle, 4-3.

Following its match against the University of Rochester (N.Y.), B-W travels to Hiram, Ohio to play traditional rival Hiram College on Wednesday Sept. 15 at 7:00 p.m. and then opens its 2010 home schedule on Saturday, Sept. 18 with a women's and men's doubleheader at The George Finnie Stadium in Berea. The women kick off at 4:30 p.m. and the men play at 7:00 p.m.
