BEREA, OHIO - Sophomore midfielder Lindsey Mikula (Rocky River) scored the match-winning goal in the third minute of overtime as the Baldwin-Wallace College women's soccer team defeated host Penn State Behrend, 2-1 in overtime, today (Sunday, September 5, 2010) in its final game at the PSB Herb Lauffler Tournament in Erie, Pennsylvania. The goal broke a stalement since a 1-1 tie in the 18th minute and was Mikula's first career goal as a Yellow Jacket.
With the victory, the Yellow Jackets are now 1-2 overall and next play a Tuesday, Sept. 7 match at traditional rival Oberlin College in Oberlin at 5:00 p.m. That is the first game of a women's and men's doubleheader. The Yellow Jackets and Yeomen kickoff at 7:00 p.m. With its loss, Penn State-Behrend is now 2-1.
The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring at the 13:13 mark of the first half when freshman midfielder Bucky Gammiere (Mentor/ Lake Catholic) scored her second goal of the season for a 1-0 lead. Behrend tied the match at 1-1 at the 17:39 mark via a penalty kick by Julia Schroeder. The match remained deadlocked until Mikula broke the stalemate with the winning goal.
The Yellow Jackets outshot the Lions, 11-10, but Behrend outcornered B-W, 3-0.
In net, B-W junior Katie Finley (Vermilion) played all 93 minutes, allowed one goal and was credited with three saves.
Following its match at Oberlin on Sept. 7, B-W will return home and prepare to travel to Fredonia, New York for the SUNY-Fredonia Tournament on Sept. 10-11. On Sept. 10, the Yellow Jackets play the host school at 5:00 p.m. On Saturday, Sept. 11, B-W plays the University of Rochester (N.Y.) at 2:30 p.m.
