BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College women's soccer team lost to the University of Rochester (N.Y.), 6-3, in the Championship match of the SUNY-Fredonia Classic today (Saturday, September 11, 2010) in Fredonia, New York. The loss ended a three-match Yellow Jacket winning streak.
With its loss, the Yellow Jackets fall to 3-3 overall and next play on Wednesday September 15 at Hiram College at 4 p.m.
Rodchester opened the scoring at the 5:02 mark when Ellen Coleman scored on a cross from the left corner. UR increased its lead to 2-0 in the 21st minute when Bridgette Varin scored. The Yellow Jackets cut the deficit 2-1 at the 39:19 mark when freshman midfielder Heather Keller (Parma/Senior) scored her third goal of the season on a short cross with an assist to sophomore forward Angie Wigton (Worthington/ Christian). The score remained 2-1 at intermission.
Second half, B-W tied the game at 2-2 at the 53:02 mark when freshman Bucky Gammiere (Mentor/ Lake Catholic) scored from in front of the goal via an assist from sophomore midfielder Leah Pointer (Stow/ Stow-Munroe Falls).
At that point, Rodchester took over the game and scored four consecutive goals to take a 6-2 advantage. B-W scored its final goal by Gammiere at the 7:29 mark on a breakaway with the assist going to senior defender Ellie Reinbrecht (Toledo/ St. Ursula). In goal, freshman Tina Mathur (Mason) played all 90 minutes.
For their efforts, Gammiere and junior midfielder Lindsey Cooper (Westerville/New Albany) were selected to the All-Tournament team.
Following its next match versus Hiram, the Yellow Jackets will open their home schedule on Saturday Sept. 18 when they host Grove City College of Pennsylvania in a women's and men's doubleheader at The George Finnie Stadium. The women kick off at 4:30 p.m. and the men play at 7 p.m.
