Women's Soccer Team Loses to Case Western Reserve, 3-1, in University Circle

BEREA, OHIO - The Baldwin-Wallace College women's soccer team lost to host and Cleveland cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University, 3-1, tonight (Tuesday, September 21, 2010) at Case Field in University Circle. The loss was B-W's second straight.

With its loss, B-W is now 4-5 overall and next plays on Saturday, Sept. 25 when it hosts Westminster College of Pennsylvania in a women's and men's doubleheader on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium in Berea. The women kickoff at 1:00 p.m. and the men play at 3:00 p.m.  With its win, CWRU is now 5-2-1 overall.

The Spartans opened the scoring at the 7:42 mark of the first half to take a 1-0 lead when they scored on a high-arching shot by sophomore midfielder Devyn Lee that just cleared the head of Yellow Jacket goalie, freshman Tina Mathur (Mason). CWRU increased its lead to 2-0 at the 11:21 mark when sophomore MF Deena Levey  secured a loose ball in the box and put it by Mathur and into the empty net.

In the second half, B-W's bad luck continued as CWRU scored at the 53:56 mark to increase its lead to 3-0 when the Spartans scored on an own goal as a B-W defender tried to clear the ball out of the box, had it careen off of another Yellow Jacket defender and then off of Mathur's hands and into the net.  B-W finally scored with three seconds remaining in the match when senior forward Vickie Dreiling (Youngstown/ Cardinal Mooney)scored on a penalty kick.

The Spartans outshot the Yellow Jackets, 10-6, and corner kicks were tied at 3-3.

In net, Mathur played all 90 minutes, made four saves.
