Women's Soccer Team Ties Marietta, 2-2 in Double Overtime, in Marietta

BEREA, OHIO - The Baldwin-Wallace College women's soccer team tied Ohio Athletic Conference rival Marietta College, 2-2 in overtime, today (Saturday, October 2, 2010) in the season-opening OAC match for both teams in Marietta.  This was the nightcap of a men's and then women's doubleheader. The men beat Marietta, 3-0.

With its tie, B-W is now 5-5-2 overall and 0-0-1 in the OAC, and next plays on Wednesday, Oct. 6 when it hosts OAC-rival Capital University in The George Finnie Stadium at 7:00 p.m. With its tie, Marietta is now 2-8-2 overall and 0-0-1 in the OAC.


The Pioneers opened the scoring at the 5:31 mark of the first half when sophomore midfielder Erin Panczyk scored off a deflection and a one-touch via an assist from junior defender Danielle Staub.  The Yellow Jackets then tied the match when freshman MF Heather Keller (Parma/ Senior) scored from 15 yards out on a through ball via an assist from senior forward Vickie Dreiling (Boardman/ Youngstown Cardinal Mooney)The goal was Keller's fifth of the season and the assist was Dreiling's first of 2010.  The game remained tied, 1-1, at halftime.


In the second half, B-W took a 2-1 lead when freshman forward Bucky Gammiere (Mentor/Lake Catholic) scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season via a rare double-assist from sophmore forward Angie Wigton (Worthington/ Christian) and Keller.  Wigton's assist was her team-leading third. Marietta then tied the game for the final time at 2-2 when junior MF Cara Nuss chipped one in from 22 yards after a pass and assist from junior MF Tessa Harlow. The game remained tied, 2-2, at the end of the second half and moved to overtime.


Neither team scored in the two 10-minute overtimes and there were eight total shots.


The Yellow Jackets outshot the Pioneers, 24-16, including 5-3 in the two overtimes, and cornered Marietta, 5-4.


In net, B-W senior Caitlin Sutter (Toledo/ Slyvania Southview) played all 110 minutes, allowed two goals and made four saves.


Following its match with Capital at home next Wednesday, B-W travels to Westerville on Oct. 9 for an OAC doubleheader at Otterbein University with the women playing at 1:00 p.m. and the men kicking off at 3:30 p.m.
