BEREA, OHIO - The Baldwin-Wallace College women's soccer team lost to Ohio Athletic Conference and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University by a score of 2-1 in double overtime tonight (Tuesday, October 27, 2009) on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium in Berea. JCU's Caroline McGraw scored with only 32 seconds remaining to give the Blue Streaks the win.
With the loss, the Yellow Jackets are now 6-11-2 overall and 2-6 in the OAC. JCU is now 7-9-2 and 5-2-1 in the OAC.
Overall, the Yellow Jackets outshot the Blue Streaks 20-17 while JCU won the corner kick battle, 6-4.
In the first half, B-W opened the scoring at 37:39 when senior All-OAC midfielder Stephanie Geiger (Berea) scored off an assist from sophomore midfielder Melissa Small (Rochester, Mich./Stoney Creek). The goal was Geiger's team-best fifth of the season and the assist was Small's first of her career. But only 1:58 before the half, JCU's Caitlyn Walton equalized on a direct free kick from 35 yards which found the back of the net, making the score 1-1 at the intermission.
Neither team could manage a goal in either the second half or the first overtime period. In the second OT period, both teams had near misses until Walton's corner was headed in by McGraw with only 32 ticks left on the clock.
In net, B-W sophomore goalie Meagan McLaughlin (Warren/ Cardinal Mooney) faced nine shots on goal (17 overall) and recorded seven saves, playing all 110 minutes.
B-W is back in action on this Saturday, October 31 when they host OAC foe Wilmington College in Berea at 1:00 p.m. on Senior Day as the Jackets conclude their regular season.
