BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College women's soccer team lost to Virginia Wesleyan College, 2-0, today (Friday, September 11, 2009) in the opening round of the Christopher Newport University Captains Classic Tournament in Newport News, Virginia. The Yellow Jackets now play the host school tomorrow at 7:00 p.m.
With its loss, B-W is now 2-2-1 this season, while Virginia Wesleyan improves to 3-1 overall and has only allowed one goal in four contests.
VWC scored the only goal it needed to win at the 43:49 mark when Shannon Scott scored via an assist from Hanna Winkel. Scott scored an unassisted insurance goal at the 75:59 mark for the final tally of the match.
Overall, the Marlins outshot the Yellow Jackets, 8-3, and outcornered B-W, 4-0. B-W's three shots were taken one each by junior defender Caitlin Sutter (Toledo/ Sylvania Southview), freshman forward Angie Wigton (Worthington Christian) and senior forward Natalie Fox (Canfield).
In goal for B-W, sophomore Meagan McLaughlin (Warren/Cardinal Mooney) faced eight shots, including seven on-goal, allowed a pair of goals and made five saves. A pair of VWC goalies saw action, including starter Allison Lennox who played the first 77:21, did not allow a goal and made a pair of saves. Rachel Calkins relieved Lennox for the final 12:39 and made one save and did not allow a goal.
Following its game tomorrow against Christopher Newport, the Yellow Jackets next play on Wednesday, Sept. 16 when they host traditional rival Hiram College at 4:30 p.m. at Finnie Stadium in Berea in the first game of a men's and women's doubleheader. The B-W men play Oberlin College at 7:00 p.m.
