Women's Soccer Team Defeats Mount Union, 3-2, in OAC Opener

BEREA, OHIO - The Baldwin-Wallace College women's soccer team defeated visiting Mount Union College, 3-2,  this evening (Saturday, October 3, 2009) on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium in the Ohio Athletic Conference opener for both teams. The game was designated as a "Kickin' for the Cure" night with all proceeds being donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation and its research towards finding a cure for breast cancer.

With the win, the Yellow Jackets are now 5-5-2 overall and 1-0 in the OAC. Mount Union falls to 3-6-1 overall and 0-1 in the OAC.

Mount Union opened the scoring when Alyssa Flitcraft scored at the 7:44 mark as her offensive pressure paid off when a deflected ball found the way into the B-W net.  B-W answered when senior All-OAC defender Stephanie Geiger (Berea) scored off a cross from freshman forward Brigitte Petrash (Parma/Normandy) at the 19:30 mark.  The assist was the first of Petrash's career.  Then, junior midfielder Liz Rice (Wooster/Triway) capitalized on a rebound in the 38th minute, unassisted,  for her first goal of the season.  B-W maintained the 2-1 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the Jackets increased their advantage to 3-1 when Geiger converted a penalty kick at the 58:58 mark.  Mount Union cut the lead to one when Deidre Dick also scored via PK at 74:59, but B-W was able to keep the Purple Raiders from scoring over the last 15 minutes to preserve the 3-2 win.

B-W outshot Mount Union, 19-8 and also won the battle of corners, 3-2.

In goal, sophomore Meagan McLaughlin (Warren/ Youngstown Cardinal Mooney) made five saves to improve to 5-4-2.

B-W returns to action this Wednesday, October 7 when they travel to Tiffin to play Ohio Athletic Conference foe Heidelberg University at 7:00 p.m.
