Lairson Scores 1000th Career Point but BW Falls to Capital

BEREA, Ohio – Senior two-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference guard Jessica Lairson (Louisville) scored a team-high 19 points but it was not enough as the Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team fell to Capital University, 83-68, in an OAC game in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.  The game was originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon but was moved to today to due inclement weather.
 
In addition to Lairson, for BW (13-3, 8-2 OAC), junior guard Shari Mangas (Leipsic) scored 12 points. Capital (10-6, 7-3) was led by freshman guard Lauren Stefacin with a game-high 25 points, including making seven of eight three-point attempts. In addition, senior guard Cookie Geroski had 16 points, sophomore Kristen Thompson had 13 and sophomore guard Jenna Erwin had 10.
 
Lairson now has 1,013 career points and stands in the 13th player in school history to top the 1,000-Point mark.
 
Capital opened the game on a 6-0 run that culminated when Geroski split a pair of free throws with 17:04 remaining.  The Yellow Jackets scored their first points of the game when sophomore guard Alissa Munro (Mansfield/Lexington) knocked down a three-pointer at the 15:14 mark.
 
The Crusaders went on a 12-4 run to extend their lead to 18-7 on a jumper by Irwin with 11:32 left to play.  BW responded with a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 18-14 when Lairson buried a trey at 9:49. 
 
Capital answered right back with an 8-2 run to push its lead to 28-16 on a three-pointer by Stefancin with 6:15 remaining. The Yellow Jackets outscored the Crusaders 16-10 over the remainder of the first half and trailed 38-32 at the intermission.
 
BW opened up the second half on an 11-3 run to take a 43-42 lead on a jumper by Lairson with 16:30 remaining.  Capital responded with a 10-0 run to take a 52-43 lead on a three by Stefancin at 12:12.  The Yellow Jackets answered back with a 7-4 run to cut the lead to 53-50 on a three-pointer by sophomore guard Ally Dehart (Beaver, Pa.) with 9:53 left.
 
The Crusaders closed out the game on a 30-18 run to secure its second win of the season against BW.
 
The Yellow Jackets next play when they travel to Ada on Wednesday, January 29 to play Ohio Northern University in an OAC game in the ONU Sports Center at 7:30 p.m. BW's next home game is on Saturday, February 1 when it hosts Otterbein University in the Ursprung Gymnasium at 3:00 p.m.
