BW Women’s Basketball Loses at Capital, 67-58

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sophomore guard Alissa Munro (Mansfield/Lexington) scored 15 points, but the Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team lost to arch-rival Capital University, 67-58, in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Capital Center. The loss ended a five-game winning streak for the Yellow Jackets.

BW, 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the  OAC, was picked to win the OAC title this winter by the OAC coaches. Capital, now, 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the OAC, was led by sophomore Kristen Thompson's game-high 19 points.

In the first half, Capital grabbed a 2-0 lead at 19:48 when junior center Monica Heckman made a jump shot and BW tied it 2-2 when senior All-OAC forward Jessica Lairson (Louisville) made two foul shots at 19:19.  The Crusaders scored 10 straight points to grab a 12-2 lead at 13:54 when freshman forward Colleen Fodessey made a three-pointer. BW finally ended the run and cut the deficit to 12-4 at 13:35 when Munro made a jump shot.

Capital's lead grew to 11 at 19-8 at 10:10 when Fodessey made a layup. BW scored four straight to make it a 19-12 game at 9:45 when Munro canned a trey, but the Crusaders pushed it back to nine at 21-12 when senior guard Cookie Geroski made a jumper at 7:53.  BW cut the lead to 21-16 at 5:27 when junior guard Shari Mangas (Leipsic) made a pair of charity tosses.

Capital rebuilt its lead back to a first half high of 11 at 27-16 when it scored six straight points, including a layup by Thompson at 2:53. BW came right back with four straight points and cut the lead to 27-20 when sophomore guard Ally Dehart (Beaver, Pa.) made two foul shots at 1:45. A foul shot by junior guard Shelby Sheets at 1:33 closed the first period scoring and Capital when into the lockeroom with a 28-20 advantage.

In the second half, Capital gained a double-digit lead at 30-20 and 32-22 when Heckman grabbed an offensive rebound a laid the ball into the basket at 18:26. Munro countered with a triple at 17:33 to reduce the lead to 32-25.

After Capital scored to make it a 34-25 contest at 17:10 on a jumper by Thompson, the Yellow Jackets ran off nine straight markers to tie the game at 34-34 with 15:42 left when Munro made a layup. Undaunted, the Crusaders scored four straight to take a 38-34 advantage at 14:25 when senior forward Jamie Caton made a jumper.

After BW closed to within 38-36 with 13:41 on a layup by sophomore guard Janaya Feaster (Akron/Archbishop Hoban), Capital outscored BW 11-2 to rebuild its biggest lead of 11 at 49-38 at 7:39 when sophomore guard Nina Napolitano stole the ball and drove the length of the court for a layup. It also led to a BW timeout.

Following the timeout, Thompson gave Capital its biggest lead at 51-38 with a jumper. BW's Feaster ended the run with a jumper at 5:35 to make it 51-40. BW outscored Capital 10-6 to close to 57-50 with 3:05 remaining when freshman guard Mackenzie Colombo (Strasburg) made a layup, but that was as close as BW would get to the Crusaders.

BW is back in action next Saturday, Dec. 14 when it travels to Wilmington, Ohio to play Wilmington College ion an OAC game at the Fred Razik Arena at 3:00 p.m. The Yellow Jackets next play at home on Wednesday, Dec. 18 when they the University of Mount Union in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymanisum in the Lou Higgins Center at 7:30 p.m.
