Smolik Leads BW Women’s Basketball Past Marietta

BEREA, Ohio – Junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC guard Audrey Smolik (Strongsville) scored a game-high 20 points as the Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team defeated Marietta College, 85-64, in an OAC game in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.  Smolik also is this month's OAC Scholar-Athlete of the Month.

BW (10-3, 5-1 OAC) has won five straight games against Marietta (8-5, 2-4 OAC).  The Yellow Jackets also have won 38 of the last 39 meetings, including 33 consecutive games from December 19, 1994 to December 3, 2012.
 
In addition to Smolik for BW, senior center Lexi Rohrbach (Tiffin/Columbian) tallied 19 points and had a team-high six rebounds, and junior guard Shari Mangas (Leipsic) contributed 11. The Pioneers were led by senior guard Tori Dixon as she scored 14 points.
 
The Yellow Jackets opened the game on an 11-0 run when Mangas hit a runner in the lane at the 16:37 mark.  Marietta scored its first points of the game and ended the run when junior forward Candice Alexander scored on a layup with 16:12 remaining.
 
The Pioneers would cut the lead down to seven points at 13-6 when Dixon hit a jumper at the 15:16 mark.   BW would respond with an 18-6 run and pushed its lead to 31-13 when Mangas knocked down a jumper with 6:55 left.
 
The Yellow Jackets would extend their lead to as many as 22 points in the first half at 40-18 when Rohrbach split a pair of free throws at 1:58.   BW led 42-25 at the intermission.
 
Marietta would not overcome the 17-point halftime deficit as the Yellow Jackets pushed their lead to many as 28 points in the second half at 81-53 on a layup by freshman guard Jessa Gilberto (Naples, Fla./Walsh Jesuit [Ohio]) with 3:19 remaining in the game.
