BW Women’s Basketball Team Beats Wilmington

WILMINGTON, Ohio – Junior guard Shari Mangas (Leipsic) scored 18 points and the Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team scored 50 first half points against Ohio Athletic Conference rival Wilmington College in an 85-39 victory in an OAC game in the Fred Razik Arena.

BW, 6-2 overall and 2-1 in the OAC, also received 12 points from sophomore guard Alissa Munro (Mansfield/Lexington) and 11 points and a game-high-tying seven rebounds from senior forward Lexi Rohrbach (Tiffin/Columbian).  Wilmington, now, 4-4 overall and 2-1 in the OAC, was led by senior forward Makenzie Wippel and freshman guard Brittany Jefferson with eight points each.

BW canned 51 percent of its field goal attempts on 33 of 65 attempts, including 12 of 28 from three-point range, and made all seven of its foul shots. The Yellow Jackets also dominated the backboards and they outrebounded the Quakers, 47-32.

In the first half, BW gained a 2-0 lead at the 19:34 mark when Rohrbach made a layup. Wilmington tied it at 2-2 at 19:18 when senior guard Hayley Howard made a layup. BW then outscored the Quakers 7-2, including five points by Mangas, to take a 9-4 lead at 17:48.

Then the Yellow Jackets went on two 14-0 runs and outscored Wilmington 28-3 during that span to put the game away early.

After a Quaker basket made it 9-6 with 15:10 left, BW went on its first 14-0 run. It was fueled by five more Mangas points, including her second three-pointer of the game. A layup by junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC guard/ forward Audrey Smolik (Strongsville) made the score 23-6 at 8:28 to end the first run.

After a Wilmington foul shot at 7:45 that made it 23-7, the Yellow Jackets went on their second 14-0 run. That run was ignited by five points, including a triple, from Munro at 6:17, and ended when Rohrbach made an old-fashioned three-point play at 4:41 for a 37-7 advantage.

BW didn't stop there as it outscored Wilmington 13-7 the remainder of the first stanza and took a 50-14 lead into the lockeroom when Smolik canned a jumper as time expired.
  
In the second half, BW push the lead to 39 at 53-14 when senior two-time All-OAC forward Jessica Lairson (Louisville) canned a three-pointer at 19:19.  Lairson tied Rohrbach for game-high rebounding honors with seven. The lead got as high as 61 points at 83-22 with 9:51 remaining when sophomore guard Erin Allen (Girard, Pa.) made a layup. The closest the Quakers would get to the Yellow Jackets after that point was the final score.

BW is back in action next on Wednesday, Dec. 18 when they the University of Mount Union in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymanisum in the Lou Higgins Center at 7:30 p.m. BW will stay on the road and play at Waynesburg (Pa.) University on Saturday, Dec. 21 at 3:00 p.m.
