Softball Opens OAC Play with Sweep of Marietta

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team opened Ohio Athletic Conference action as it swept and outscored Marietta College by a margin of 25-1 at Marietta Field.

BW (14-2, 2-0 OAC), who swept Marietta (9-7, 0-2 OAC) for the first time since 2010, won the opener 16-1 in five innings and took the second game by a score of 9-0 in five innings.

In game one, the Yellow Jackets scored 16 runs on 16 hits as they plated one run in the first, eight in the second sparked by the first collegiate grand slam for freshman designated hitter Ashley Matousek (Sagamore Hills/Akron Archbishop Hoban) and five in the fifth sparked by the homeruns from senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC right fielder Alexis Boledovic (Brook Park/Berea-Midpark) and junior Academic All-OAC second baseman Alex Kozich (Avon).   The Pioneers scored one run on two hits as they pushed one their lone run across the plate in the second.

The BW offense was led by Kozich as she went 4-for-4 with her first collegiate homerun, a career-high tying four runs batted-in (RBIs) and two runs scored.  Boledovic was 3-for-4 with a homerun, a career-high tying two doubles, three runs scored and three runs batted-in (RBIs).   Freshman third baseman Kami Helm (Uniontown/Green) was 3-for-4 with career-high six RBIs.  Senior All-OAC shortstop Erica English (North Olmsted) went 2-for-4 with a run scored.  Matousek led four other Yellow Jackets hitters with a base knock as she went 1-for-4 with a grand slam and a career-high three RBIs.

In the circle, freshman right hander Nikki Camarati (Brunswick/Holy Name) won her first career OAC game and her seventh game of the season as she allowed one run on two hits with six strikeouts and two walks.  Sophomore All-OAC lefty Abby Cosart (Lima/Bath) pitched the final scoreless and hitless inning with two strikeouts.

In game two, the Yellow Jackets scored nine runs on 15 hits as they plated one run in the first, one in the second, two in the third and five in the fifth.  Marietta was held scoreless for the second time this season on just two hits.

The BW offense was led by Matousek as she went 3-for-3 with a career-high two doubles and three RBIs.  Kozich was 2-for-2 with a double, walk and two RBIs.  Boledovic went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.  Junior center fielder Macy Leach (Westerville/Central) was 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and run scored.  English went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. 

In the circle, Camarati, who pitched her first career doubleheader, won her sixth straight game and seventh overall as she allowed just one hit with five strikeouts and two walks.  Cosart pitched a scoreless final inning as she allowed one hit with one strikeout.

The Yellow Jackets remain on the road on Sunday, March 24 when they travel to Wooster for a non-conference doubleheader against The College of Wooster at 1 p.m.  BW returns home on Tuesday, March 26 when it hosts a non-conference doubleheader against Thiel (Pa.) College at 3:30 p.m.
