Softball Strikes Lightning Twice in Sweep of Crosstown Rival John Carroll

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team swept crosstown rival John Carroll University in a rescheduled Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader on Bracken Field.

The doubleheader was originally scheduled for Tuesday, April 2 but was postponed due to inclement weather.

BW (21-3, 5-1 OAC), who swept John Carroll (10-12, 1-5 OAC) on Bracken Field for the first time since the 1999 season and improved to 40-32 in the all-time series, took the opener by a final score of 4-2 and the night cap by a score of 6-3.

In game one, the Yellow Jackets scored four runs on six hits as they plated one run in the fourth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh on the game-winning homerun for freshman designated hitter Ashley Matousek (Sagamore Hills/Akron Archbishop Hoban).   The Blue Streaks scored two runs on six hits as they pushed both runs across the plate in the fifth inning. 

The BW offense was led by Matousek as she went 1-for-4 with a homer, run scored and two runs batted-in (RBIs). Junior center fielder Macy Leach (Westerville/Central) went 2-for-3 with a double, run scored and an RBI. Junior Academic All-OAC second baseman Alex Kozich (Avon) was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC right fielder Alexis Boledovic (Brook Park/Berea-Midpark) was 1-for-3 with a double and walk.  Senior All-OAC shortstop Erica English (North Olmsted) was 1-for-2 with two walks.

In the circle, freshman right hander Nikki Camarati (Brunswick/Holy Name) won her 10th straight game and league leading 12th as she allowed two runs on six hits with a career-high 11 strikeouts with seven walks. Camarati, who is now 12-1 and has not lost to a Division III opponent, leads the OAC in earned run average at 1.55 and strikeouts with 89.

In game two, the Yellow Jackets scored six runs on seven hits as they plated one run in the first, two runs on the two-run homerun by sophomore first baseman Mackenzie Milligan (Cleveland/St. Joseph Academy) in the third, one in the fifth and two runs in the sixth.   John Carroll scored three runs on six hits as they pushed one run across the plate in the first, one in the third and one in the seventh.

The BW offense was led by Matousek as she went 2-for-3 with a run scored, RBI and a walk. Senior left fielder Abbie Thompson (Madison) was 2-for-3 with a run scored and a sacrifice bunt. Milligan was 1-for-3 with a homerun, run scored, two RBIs and a sacrifice fly.  Senior catcher Sami Minor (North Royalton) was 1-for-2 with two runs scored, two RBIs and two walks.  Kozich went 1-for-4.

In the circle, sophomore All-OAC left hander Abby Cosart (Lima/Bath) picked up her seventh win of the season (7-2) as she allowed three runs on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks

BW is back in action on Saturday, April 6 when it opens a four-game homestand when it hosts an OAC doubleheader against Wilmington College at 1 p.m.  The Yellow Jackets close out the homestand on Sunday, April 7 with a non-conference doubleheader against Adrian (Mich.) College at 1 p.m.
