Softball Splits Rescheduled OAC Doubleheader with Mount Union

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team split a rescheduled Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader with the University of Mount Union on the BW Softball Field at the Roehm Athletic Complex.

The doubleheader was originally scheduled for Saturday, March 30 but was postponed on two occasions due to inclement weather and snow coverage on the turf surface.

BW (19-3, 3-1 OAC), who has won 16 of the last 17 games, won the opener by a final score of 6-0 but fell to Mount Union (13-11, 1-5 OAC) in the night cap by a score of 12-0 in five innings.

In game one, the Yellow Jackets scored six runs on nine hits as they plated three runs in the second and sixth innings.   The Purple Raiders were held scoreless for the third time the season om just one hit

The BW offense was led by freshman third baseman Kami Helm (Uniontown/Green) as she went 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and a career-high three runs batted-in (RBIs).  Junior Academic All-OAC second baseman Alex Kozich (Avon) was 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored.  Five other Yellow Jackets had a base knock with senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC right fielder Alexis Boledovic (Brook Park/Berea-Midpark) tallying the other RBI.

In the circle, freshman right hander Nikki Camarati (Brunswick/Holy Name) won her OAC-leading 11th game (11-1) and recorded her fourth shutout of the season.  Camarati did not allow a run and gave up her only hit off the game in the second inning with eight strikeouts and no walks.

In game two, BW was held scoreless for the first time this season on a season-low three hits .  Mount Union scored 12 runs on 16 hits as it scored at least one run in every inning.  The Purple Raiders plated one run in the first, two runs in the second and third, four runs in the fourth and three runs in the fifth.

The Yellow Jackets got their three hits from Boledovic, senior All-OAC shortstop Erica English (North Olmsted) and junior center fielder Macy Leach (Westerville/Central).

In the circle, sophomore All-OAC left hander Abby Cosart (Lima/Bath) took the loss as she allowed three runs on five hits in two innings with one strikeout.  Camarati pitched one inning of relief and allowed four runs on four hits with one walk.  Freshman right hander Ashley Matousek (Sagamore Hills/Akron Archbishop Hoban) pitched one-third of an inning and allowed two runs on three hits with a walk.  Freshman righty Hannah Welling (Ravenna) pitched the final 1.2 innings and allowed three runs on four hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

BW is back in action on Thursday, April 4 when it travels to University Heights for a rescheduled OAC doubleheader against crosstown rival John Carroll University at 3 p.m.  The Yellow Jackets then begin a four-game homestand on Saturday, April 6 when it hosts an OAC doubleheader against Wilmington College at 1 p.m.
