Kozich’s Walk-Off Propels Softball to Non-Conference Sweep of Adrian (Mich.)

BEREA, Ohio – Baldwin Wallace University softball junior Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference second baseman Alex Kozich (Avon) hit a game-winning walk-off single in game two to secure a non-conference doubleheader sweep of Adrian (Mich.) College on the BW Softball Field at the Roehm Athletic Complex. 

The Yellow Jackets (25-3), who have now won six straight games and 22 of the last 24 games, won the opening game by a final score of 7-0 and rallied from three runs down to win the finale by a score of 5-4.

In game one, BW scored seven runs on nine hits as it plated two runs in the first and exploded for five runs in the fifth sparked by the inside the park homerun by Kozich.  Adrian (14-12) was held scoreless for the third time this season on two hits. 

The Yellow Jacket offense was led by Kozich as she went 2-for-3 with a homerun, run scored and three runs batted-in (RBIs).  Senior All-OAC shortstop Erica English (North Olmsted) was 2-for-3 with a run scored and RBI. Freshman designated player Ashley Matousek (Sagamore Hills/Akron Archbishop Hoban) was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC right fielder Alexis Boledovic (Brook Park/Berea-Midpark) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Junior center fielder Macy Leach (Westerville/Central) was 1-for-2 with a double, run scored, two RBIs and a walk. 

In the circle, freshman right hander Nikki Camarati (Brunswick/Holy Name) won her 14th straight game and recorded her sixth shutout of the season as she did not allow a run on two hits with a career-high 15 strikeouts and two walks.   Camarati, who is now 15-1, leads the OAC in victories, earned run average with a 1.24 ERA and strikeouts with 117.

In game two, BW scored five runs on 10 hits as it plated one run in the third, took the lead in the fifth when it scored three runs and walked-off with the victory with one run in the seventh.  The Bulldogs scored four runs on five hits as it pushed three runs across in the second and tied the game up in the sixth with one run.

The Yellow Jacket offense was led by Boledovic as she went 3-for-4 with three runs scored.   Matousek was 2-for-2 with two doubles, three RBIs and an intentional walk.  Leach went 2-for-4.  Kozich was 1-for-3 with the game winning single, two RBIs and a sacrifice fly.  Senior left fielder Abbie Thompson (Madison) and freshman third baseman Kami Helm (Uniontown/Green) had the other two base knocks.

In the circle, sophomore All-OAC left hander Abby Cosart (Lima/Bath) won her eighth game of the season (8-2) as she allowed four runs (one earned) on five hits with one strikeout and two walks.

BW begins a six-game road trip on Wednesday, April 10 when it travels to Ada for an OAC first-place showdown with Ohio Northern University at 3 p.m.  The Yellow Jackets and Ohio Northern are tied for first place along with Muskingum University with a 7-1 league record.  BW then travels to Hiram on Thursday, April 11 for its non-conference doubleheader finale against Hiram College at 4 p.m.  The Yellow Jackets close out the road trip on Saturday, April 13 when they travel to New Concord for an OAC doubleheader against Muskingum at 1 p.m.
