BEREA, OHIO – Eight Yellow Jackets recorded a hit and the Baldwin Wallace University softball team pounded out 13 total on its way to a 8-3 win against The College of Wooster in the first game of a non-league doubleheader at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field. This is the sixth doubleheader in six days for the Yellow Jackets.
The win, BW's fifth in the last eight games, improves the Yellow Jackets to 18-13 overall. Wooster falls to 13-14.
Wooster took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference right-hander Tabitha Murray (Mogadore/Field) drilled a three-run home run in the Yellow Jackets' half of the first to give BW a one-run edge.
Run batted-in singles from junior left fielder Nikki Peskura (Strongsville), junior third baseman Kaity Mullen (Avon Lake), and sophomore shortstop Brittany Lightel (Tallmadge) plated three more runs in the BW fourth. An RBI single by freshman center fielder Jessica Chidsey (West Salem/Black River) in the fifth and another by freshman Taylor Kinsey (Jeromesville/Ashland) in the sixth added a pair of insurance runs.
Murray allowed a single tally in the Wooster seventh.
Peskura led BW at the plate by going 3-for-3 with a walk, double, one RBI and one run scored. Chidsey was 2-for-3 with a walk, one RBI, and two runs. Lightel went 2-for-4 with one RBI and a stolen base. Sophomore first baseman Mackenzie Brua (Avon) was 2-for-2 with a run.
Murray surrendered one earned run on five hits, struck out eight batters and issued four walks, and improved to 15-7 in her 14th complete game of the season.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action Saturday, April 20 when they host Ohio Northern University in an OAC doubleheader at 1 p.m.
