BW Softball Falls To Muskingum to Earn Doubleheader Split

NEW CONCORD, OHIO – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team was defeated by Muskingum University in the second game of an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader by a final score of 14-2 in five innings at the Donna Newberry Field.  BW won the first game by a final score of 8-6.

With the loss, the Yellow Jackets fell to 8-4 overall and 1-1 in the OAC.  With the victory, the Fighting Muskies improved to 12-4 overall and 1-1 in the OAC.  

Muskingum's offense came out clicking on all cylinders as it scored all of its runs in the first two innings.  The Fighting Muskies scored six runs in the bottom of the first and added eight more runs in the bottom of the second inning.

The Yellow Jackets scored their first run of the game in the top of the third inning.  With one out, sophomore leftfielder Mackenzie Brua (Avon) was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on the two out single by senior rightfielder Alyssa Brown (Hudson).  Brua would score when junior first baseman/pitcher Kaity Mullen (Avon Lake) picked up the run batted in when she reached on an error.

BW would add one run in the top of the fifth inning to close out the scoring.  Junior leftfielder/pitcher Nikki Peskura (Strongsville) led off the inning with a single to left field.  Peskura advanced to third on the double to right center from junior All-OAC designated player Tabitha Murray (Mogadore/Field).  Peskura would score on a wild pitch and junior Melissa Vermes (Middleburg Heights/Midpark), who pinch ran for Murray, went to third.

Despite the loss, the Yellow Jacket offense scored two runs on four hits and was led by Murray, who went 2-for-3 with a double. Brown was 1-for-2 with a walk and Peskura also went 1-for-2 with a run scored.

On the mound,  sophomore Lauren Mims (Wellington) got the start and pitched one inning while allowing six runs (on seven hits with a walk.  Sophomore Kristin Esquibel (Wichita Falls, Texas/Hirschi), who saw her first action in a BW uniform,  pitched two-thirds of an inning and allowed eight runs (three earned) on two hits with two strikeouts and five walks.  Mullen, who made her first career appearance on the mound, pitched a third of an inning and allowed no runs on no hits.  Peskura pitched the final two innings and only allowed one base runner as she had one walk.

The Yellow Jackets will play four doubleheaders next week, including its home opener as well as two others at the friendly confines of the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field.   BW will host Otterbein University  on Tuesday, April 2 at 3:00 p.m.  That doubleheader was originally scheduled for March 22.  The Yellow Jackets will then hit the road the following day when they travel to Hiram on Wednesday, April 3 to face the Terriers in a non-conference doubleheader at 3:30 p.m.   BW will then host NAIA Loudres University on Friday, April 5 in a non-conference doubleheader at 3:30 p.m.   The Yellow Jackets will close out the week on Saturday, April 6 when they host the University of Mount Union in an OAC doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.  Fans can follow all of the home action live via live stats at http://livestats.prestosports.com/baldwinwallace
