BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University softball team lost the first game of an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader to Ohio Northern University, 11-6, at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field.  This is the seventh doubleheader in nine days for the Yellow Jackets.  

The loss drops BW 18-15 overall and 3-8 in the OAC. ONU improves to 9-10 overall and 8-5 in the OAC.

Kelly Sheridan's two-run home run in the top of the first inning gave the Polar Bears a 2-0 lead.

BW plated single runs in the bottom of the second, third and fourth innings to take a 3-2 edge.  Sophomore first baseman Mackenzie Brua (Avon) knocked in senior right fielder Alyssa Brown (Hudson), who hit a leadoff double, in the second inning.  Sophomore All-OAC shortstop Brittany Lightel (Tallmadge) singled before scoring on senior All-OAC left fielder Ashley Elber's (Huron/ Edison) single in the third, and Brua scored in the fourth on junior All-OAC designated hitter Tabitha Murray's (Mogadore/Field) fielder's choice.

The Polar Bears staked themselves to a 9-3 lead by tallying four runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth.

BW rallied for three runs in the sixth on a RBI ground out by junior All-OAC third baseman Kaity Mullen (Avon Lake) and RBI singles by Brown and Elber.

At the plate, Elber went 3-for-4 with two RBI, and Brown and Brua each were 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored.

On the mound, junior right-hander Nikki Peskura (Strongsville) allowed all 11 runs (eight earned) on 12 hits, struck out four batters and walked eight, and took the loss to fall to 2-7 in her fifth complete game of the season.

The Yellow Jackets close the 2013 campaign this week with an OAC doubleheader Tuesday, April 23 at Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University at 3 p.m. before facing Case Western Reserve University in a non-league twinbill on Thursday, April 25 at 3:30 p.m.  BW also hosts Marietta College on Seniors' Day on Saturday, April 27 at 1 p.m.
