Men’s Soccer Team Falls 3-1 to Stevens in Season Opener

PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA --  The Baldwin Wallace University men's soccer team opened its 2012 season with a 3-1 loss against No.7-ranked Stevens (N.J.) Institute of Technology at the Carnegie-Mellon (Pa.) University Invitational. The Yellow Jackets are back in action tomorrow versus Hobart (N.Y.) College at 5:00 p.m.
 
BW now 0-1, is coming off a school-record setting season when it compiled a record 16 victories, a 16-6 overall mark and advanced to the NCAA Division III national tournament for the first time in school history.  The Yellow Jackets are seeking a school-record 11th straight winning season under the direction of veteran Head Coach Reid Ayers.  With the win, Stevens now 1-0 overall, plays host Carnegie Mellon tomorrow.
 
In the first half, the Ducks opened the scoring at the 21:17 mark when Zach Alder scored off an assist from Victor Daza. The Yellow Jackets knotted the game back up at 1-1 when sophomore Vince Milner (Mayfield) scored his first career goal at 35:15 of the opening period . Senior Pat Brennan (Akron/ Walsh Jesuit) and sophomore Cody Smith (Brunswick) were each credited with an assist on Milner's score.

Stevens would regain the lead when Christian Grapel would score the game-winning unassisted goal at the 38:26 mark of the first half,
 
In the second half, the Ducks closed out the scoring 3-1 at the 48:42 mark when Alder tallied his second goal.

In goal for BW, senior Tyler Beaton (Bemus Point, N.Y./ Maple Grove) faced 14 Stevens shots and made six saves.
 
In the game, the Ducks outshot the Yellow Jackets, 14-4, and outcornered BW, 5-3.
 
Following its game versus Hobart tomorrow, BW next plays on Tuesday, September 4 when it travels to Oberlin to play Oberlin College in a nonleague men's and women's doubleheader at 5:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., respectively. Next weekend, Friday and Saturday, Sept. 7-8, the BW men play Carnegie-Mellon and Defiance at the Ohio Northern University Invitational Tournament.

On Tuesday, October 9, the Yellow Jacket men's and women's soccer teams will host Ohio Athletic Conference foe Heidelberg University in a doubleheader that will be televised by SportsTime Ohio (STO).  This is the fifth straight year that BW has televised a soccer doubleheader and will put a 7-1 combined record on the line, including a 4-0 mark by the women.
