Deighton’s Last Second Goal Lifts Men’s Soccer Over Grove City

BEREA, OHIO --   Sophomore Ben Deighton (Richfield/Revere) scored the game-winner with 28 seconds remaining in the game as the Baldwin Wallace University men's soccer team won its home opener against Grove City (Pa.) College, 2-1, on the Tressel Field at the George Finnie Stadium.
With its victory, BW is 5-1 overall and has won five straight matches. Grove City is now 2-5 overall.
 
In the first half, the two teams battled to a scoreless tie as both squads each had four shots.

In the second half, the Wolverines opened the scoring, 1-0, when Andrew Quinn took the corner kick from Alex Ayer and heading it into the back of the net at the 55:38 mark.
The Yellow Jackets quickly responded, 1-1, when senior CAPITAL ONE Academic All-American forward Pat Brennan (Akron/ Walsh Jesuit) took the ball down the right side and hit a shot that deflected off a Grove City defender into the goal at 58:08.  It marked the fifth goal on the season for Brennan.
BW took its only lead of the game when Deighton buried the rebound shot of Brennan for the game-winner at the 89:32 mark.

Yellow Jacket senior goalkeeper Ryan Hulings (Centerville) faced 10 Wolverine shots, including five on goal, allowed one goal and made four saves in 90 minutes of action. Grove City netminder Ben Weaver faced 10 BW shots, including seven on-goal, allowed two goals and made five saves in 90 minutes.
 
In the game, the two teams tied with 10 shots each and BW won the corner kick battle, 8-7.
 
The BW men travel to Meadville, Pennsylvania on Tuesday, September 18 for a non-conference clash with Gators of Allegheny College at 7:00 p.m.  The next home game is on Saturday, September 22 when the team hosts Westminster (Pa.) College in the second game of a women's and men's non-conference doubleheader at 3:00 p.m.  The women kickoff at 1:00 p.m.

On Tuesday, October 9, the Yellow Jacket men's and women's soccer teams will host Ohio Athletic Conference foe Heidelberg University in a doubleheader that will be televised by SportsTime Ohio (STO).  This is the fifth straight year that BW has televised a soccer doubleheader and will put a 7-1 combined record on the line, including a 4-0 mark by the women.
