Men Beat 13th-Ranked Carnegie Mellon (Pa.), 5-3

ADA, OHIO --   Senior CAPITAL ONE Academic All-American forward Pat Brennan (Akron/ Walsh Jesuit) and sophomore midfielder Ben Deighton (Richfield/ Revere) each scored twice as the Baldwin Wallace University men's soccer team beat 13th-ranked Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) University, 5-3, today  in the first round of the Ohio Northern University Tournament on the ONU Soccer Field.
 
With its win, BW, which entered the season ranked 24th, is 2-1 overall and plays Defiance College tomorrow in the final game of the tourney at 12:30 p.m. CMU also is 2-1 overall and plays host and fourth-ranked ONU tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.
 
In the first half, BW gained a 1-0 lead at the 14:36 mark when forward  Brennan scored via an assist from junior forward Kirk Graf (Ashland) off of a corner kick. The goal was Brennan's first of the season and Graf's assist also was his first this season and seventh of his career.  CMU leveled the match at 22:10 when junior midfielder Mike Ferraco scored when his shot deflected off of a Yellow Jacket defender and went into the goal.

In the second half, BW regained the lead at 2-1 when Brennan dribbled down left side of the field and then beat CMU junior goalkeeper Christopher Madden with an unassisted goal with a shot to the right side of the net. It was his second goal of the game and 21st of his outstanding four-year career. The lead grew to 3-1 just more than two minutes later when Deighton received a pass from  Brennan and beat Madden with a shot to the upper right of the goal for his sixth career goal. Brennan's assist was the 17th of his career.

BW increased its advantage to 4-1 at the 62:48 mark when Deighton scored his seventh career goal via a free kick at the top of the penalty box. The Tartans made it a 5-2 contest when sophomore defender Louis Ferragonio scored and was assisted by freshman midfielder Connor Webb. BW's lead was cut to 5-3 at the 77:47 mark when sophomore forward Daniel Kursman-Neri scored via an assist from junior defender Cole Christensen off a corner kick.

BW junior goalkeeper Tyler Beaton (Bemus Point, N.Y./ Maple Grove) faced 18 Tartan shots, including 12 on-goal, allowed three goals and had nine saves. He improved his individual mark to 1-1 this season. CMU's Madden faced eight Yellow Jacket shots, including four on-goal, and allowed four goals and made zero saves. His replacement, sophomore Jacob Rice faced two BW shots, including one on-goal, allowed a goal and did not make a save.
 
In the game, Carnegie Mellon outshot BW, 18-10, and won the corner kick battle, 7-5.
 
Next week, the BW men travel to University Circle to play Cleveland cross-town and non-league rival Case Western Reserve University on Tuesday, Sept. 11 at 7:30 p.m. and then opens its 2012 home schedule on Saturday, Sept. 15 against Grove City College of Pennsylvania at 1:00 p.m. in the first game of a men's and women's doubleheader. The women kickoff at 3:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, October 9, the Yellow Jacket men's and women's soccer teams will host Ohio Athletic Conference foe Heidelberg University in a doubleheader that will be televised by SportsTime Ohio (STO).  This is the fifth straight year that BW has televised a soccer doubleheader and will put a 7-1 combined record on the line, including a 4-0 mark by the women.
