Michael Brennan Scores a Pair as Men’s Soccer Beats Oberlin, 4-2

OBERLIN, OHIO --   Sophomore midfielder Michael Brennan (Akron/ Walsh Jesuit) scores a pair of goals as the Baldwin Wallace University men's soccer team defeated host Oberlin College, 4-2, today (Tuesday, September 4, 2012) on Fred Shults Field.

With the win, BW improves to 1-1 and  Oberlin is now 2-1 overall this season.

In the first half, the Yellow Jackets struck first when Brennan scored his second career goal at the 12:07 mark when he received a ball that Oberlin could not clear out of its end of the field.  The Yeomen tied the game at 1-1 at the 21:40 mark when freshman midfielder Slade Gottlieb knocked home a 30-foot shot off an offensive set. BW then regained the lead at 2-1 at the 22:38 mark when Brennan tallied his second goal of the match and third of his career via an assist and cross from sophomore forward Cody Smith (Brunswick) and put the ball into the upper-90. The Jackets increased their advantage to 3-1 at the 36:46 mark when junior forward Andrew Preis (Mentor) scored his first career goal when Smith again assisted via a cross from the near side to the far post. The two assists give Smith three in his career.

In the second half, senior midfielder Kirk Graf (Ashland) scored the fourth BW goal of the match off of the Ben Deighton (Richfield/ Revere) blocked shot at the 57:41 mark to make the lead, 4-1. At the 58:21 mark, Oberlin answered with a header by Josh Wilkerson off the corner kick by Ari Schwartz to cut the Yellow Jacket lead in half.

Senior goalkeeper Ryan Hulings (Centerville) faced 18 shots, including 10 on-goal, and had eight saves.  Hulings improves to 1-0 this season. Oberlin netminder junior Brandt Rentel faced 20 BW shots, including 10 on-goal, and made six saves

In the game, the Yeomen outshot the Yellow Jackets, 20-18, and won the corner kick battle, 7-5.

BW next plays on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 7-8, when it travels to Ada to take part in the Ohio Northern University Invitational to play Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) University on Friday at 5:00 p.m.. The team closes out the tournament versus Defiance College on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. 

On Tuesday, October 9, the Yellow Jacket men's and women's soccer teams will host Ohio Athletic Conference foe Heidelberg University in a doubleheader that will be televised by SportsTime Ohio (STO).  This is the fifth straight year that BW has televised a soccer doubleheader and will put a 7-1 combined record on the line, including a 4-0 mark by the women.
