BW Men’s Soccer Team Falls to Capital on Seniors’ Night


BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University men's soccer team closed out the home portion of the season tonight  (Saturday, October 20, 2012) by falling to Capital University by a final score of 3-2 in an Ohio Athletic Conference match on the Tressel Field.

With the loss, the Yellow Jackets fell to 6-6-3 overall and 1-4-2 in the OAC.  With the victory, the Crusaders improved to 8-5-3 overall and 3-3-1 in the OAC.

In the first half, BW took the lead at 1-0 when sophomore forward Ben Deighton (Richfield/Revere) scored on the penalty kick at the 36:31 mark.   The goal was the fifth of the season for Deighton and snapped a 151.19-minute scoreless streak dating back to the final goal of the game in a 3-1 loss to Wilmington on October 13.

In the second half, the Yellow Jackets added to its lead at 2-0 when freshman forward Zach Smith (Parma/Normandy) scored his second goal of the season off the first assist of the season for senior defender Ben Kolich (East Aurora, N.Y.) at 49:10.

Capital cut into the lead at 2-1 when sophomore midfielder R.G. Florey scored his sixth goal of the season off the fourth assist of the year for senior midfielder Al Argyris at the 55:15 mark.  

The Crusaders tied the game at 2-2 when Florey scored his second goal of the match on the penalty kick at 63:44. Capital took its first lead of the game sophomore midfielder Bobby Atkin scored his first goal of the season off the cross from junior forward Tim MacCarthy at the 81:19 mark.

In net for the Yellow Jackets, senior goalkeeper Ryan Hulings (Centerville) faced nine Crusader shots, including four on-goal, allowed three goals and made one saves in 90:00 minutes of action. Capital goaltender Bob Weisgarber faced 12 BW shots, including five on-goal, allowed two goals and made three saves in 90:00 minutes of action.

In the match, the Yellow Jackets outshot the Crusaders, 12-9 and won the corner kick battle, 3-1.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, October 24 when they travel to Alliance to take on the Purple Raiders of the University of Mount Union at 7:00 p.m.
