No. 9 Baseball Splits at Wilmington in OAC Opening Doubleheader

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The No. 9 nationally-ranked Baldwin Wallace University baseball team was on the road to face Wilmington College in the Ohio Athletic Conference opening doubleheader on Tewsbury-Delaney Field. The Yellow Jackets (14-3, 1-1 OAC) fell in game one 6-2 to the Fightin' Quakers (11-9, 1-1 OAC) before claiming the 14-1 victory in game two.

Game 1 was led by senior utility player Drew Wilson (Sagamore Hills/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) as he hit a two-run homerun over left field to hit in BW's only runs in game one. 

Scoring Plays

  • Wilmington got the 1-0 jump on the Yellow Jackets on an RBI double to left center field in the bottom of the fourth
  • With two outs in the fifth, junior outfielder Vincent Capolupo (Kenmore, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate) singled and stolen second, putting him on second base, before the Wilson homerun put BW up 2-1
  • Wilmington came back in the bottom of the fifth to tally two runs on a 2-RBI single to centerfield (3-2 Quakers)
  • The Quakers scored three in the sixth on three hits to go up 6-2 on the Yellow Jackets
  • It was a scoreless remaining 2.5 innings for either team as the Quakers went on to win game one, 6-2

On the Mound

  • Junior right hander Dawson Gabe (Lawrence, Ind.) started on the mound for BW and got the loss, moving to 3-1 on the season, pitched five innings, allowing three runs on eight hits, and tallied four strikeouts
  • Right hander Wilson came in to relieve, throwing three innings and allowed three runs on four hits and posted one strikeout

Game 2 for the Yellow Jackets was led by Capolupo as he went 4-5 from the plate with three runs, two doubles, and an RBI. Wilson hit 3-5 with two RBIs and a run while freshman second baseman Sean Kolenich (Parma/St. Edward) hit 2-4 with four RBIs and three runs.

Scoring Plays

  • BW got the early advantage in game two on an RBI double-play, scoring Capolupo from third
  • The Yellow Jackets tallied four runs in the fourth highlighted by an RBI single from senior All-Mideast Region shortstop Alex Ludwick (Brunswick/Padua Franciscan), scoring Capolupo, and a three-run homerun over the left field fence by Kolenich making it 5-0 BW
  • In the top of the fourth, BW scored another run as Wilson notched a hit-by-pitch RBI
  • An error by the Quakers on a bunt by junior All-OAC first baseman Luke Vonderhaar (New Bremen) scored Kolenich from third (7-0 BW) in the top of the fifth
  • The Yellow Jackets extended their lead in the sixth, earning a run from an RBI single by Wilson, scoring junior third baseman Chris Viamonte (Naples, Fla./Lely), making it 8-0 BW
  • Wilmington tallied one run in the eighth
  • BW notched six runs on four hits and one error in the top of the ninth, highlighted by an RBI single by pinch hitter Carl Pennington (Wadsworth) and a two-RBI double by sophomore catcher Mark Mohnickey, Jr (14-1 BW)

On the Mound

  • Junior right hander Aidan Bennett (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) started and earned the win on the mound for BW, improving to 3-0 on year, pitching seven innings, allowing no runs on five hits, and posted eight strikeouts
  • Junior left hander Nik Baldis (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) threw the last two innings, allowing one run on two hits and notched three strikeouts

The Yellow Jackets return to play Wednesday, March 30 as they host The College of Wooster in a non-conference single game. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m. on Fisher Field.
