Coach DeAngelis Tabbed ABCA Division III Assistant Coach of the Year

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Baldwin Wallace University Associate Baseball Head Coach Tom DeAngelis has been named as the 2022 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) NCAA Division III Assistant Coach of the Year.

The ABCA began honoring a National Assistant Coach of the Year annually in 1999. Coaching expertise, recruiting, loyalty to the program and respect for the players and the game are some of the many criteria examined when reviewing the candidates for the award. Assistant Coach of the Year honorees are voted on and selected by the ABCA All-America and Coach of the Year committees, in conjunction with the ABCA national office.

DeAngelis, who is one of the 11 Assistant Coach of the Year honorees from NCAA Division I, II and III, NAIA, NJCAA and High School, will be recognized at the 79th annual ABCA Convention in Nashville, Tennessee, on January 6, 2023.

"I am extremely grateful and proud to receive this award," said DeAngelis. "The award is less a reflection of myself, and more so of the program Head Coach Brian Harrison has built, and that our guys let me be a part of. BW baseball means the world to me, and this past season provided memories that I will always cherish."

In his eighth overall season and his first as Associate Head Coach, DeAngelis claims the honor for the first time in his career after leading BW to the 2022 NCAA Division III World Series.

"Tom is one of the best baseball minds I've been around," stated Harrison "The thing that separates him is his ability to connect with our guys and build relationships. He has a genuine care for the student-athletes in our program, the athletic department, and the BW community as a whole. He has made such a positive impact on our players and our program throughout his time on campus."

During the 2022 season, DeAngelis helped mentor two All-Americans, the Elite 90 Baseball Championships Award winner, four ABCA All-Great Lakes Region players, three D3baseball.com All-Great Lakes Region recipients, four Brockport (N.Y.) Regional All-Tournament honorees, four All-OAC first-team selections, one All-OAC second-team honoree, and four OAC All-Tournament team members.  Off the diamond, he has guided a College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) All-American, a CoSIDA All-District recipient and eight Academic All-OAC selections.

On the field, DeAngelis helped led the team to set school single season records for most games played, at-bats, hits, runs, doubles, runs batted-in (RBIs) and home runs and school game records for home runs, innings pitched, pitching strikeouts, putouts and team slugging percentage and team fielding percentage. He also led players to achieve their own individual program records.

The Yellow Jackets finished the season with a 37-13 overall record with a Regional Championship, a Super Regional Championship, and a trip to the World Series.
