Baseball Falls to Babson (Mass.) on Final Day of Snowbird Classic

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team closed out its 2022 Snowbird Classic spring break trip facing Babson (Mass.) College in Centennial Park. The Yellow Jackets dropped the non-conference contest to the Beavers by a 3-2 score, finishing the week with a 6-1 record.

BW (10-1) was led by senior All-OAC right fielder Drew Wilson (Sagamore Hills/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) as he went 2-4 with a run. Junior left fielder Ryan Guggenheim (Solon) and senior catcher Mark Mohnickey, Jr (North Ridgeville/St. Edward) each tallied an RBI.

Scoring Plays

  • BW got the jump in the second inning as senior designated hitter Bijan Kamalipour (Frisco, Texas/Jesuit College Preparatory School) scored on a Babson error, hit by Mohnickey
  • The Yellow Jackets also tallied a run in the third, as Ryan Guggenheim hit a one-run single to left field, making it 2-0 BW
  • Babson (3-2 overall) earned a run in the fifth on an RBI single to centerfield
  • With the Yellow Jackets leading 2-1, it was a scoreless 2.5 innings
  • A sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the eighth by the Beavers put runners on second and third with one out
  • A blooper to short left field tallied two runs for Babson to put them up 3-2
  • The Yellow Jackets last chance in the ninth ended with a hit by freshman second baseman Sean Kolenich (Parma/St. Edward) but no runs as Babson claimed the 3-2 victory

On the Mound

  • Junior right hander Dawson Gabe (Lawrence, Ind.) threw five innings, allowing one run on five hits and tallied eight strikeouts
  • Freshman right hander Kade Swisher (Berea/Berea-Midpark) pitched one inning and allowed three hits
  • Senior right hander Scott Kirchhoff (Toledo/Sylvania Northview) threw the last two innings and allowed two runs on two hits and posted three strikeouts

The Yellow Jackets return to the diamond Saturday, March 19 as the host a two-day four-team tournament at Fisher Field. BW will take on Hiram College on Saturday at 10:00 a.m to start the weekend.
