Vonderhaar Smacks Two Homeruns, No. 9 Baseball Splits OAC Doubleheader With Heidelberg

TIFFIN, Ohio – The No. 9 nationally-ranked Baldwin Wallace University baseball faced Heidelberg University in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader located at Peaceful Valley. The Yellow Jackets' (20-5, 6-2 OAC) big four-run ninth inning and Vonderhaar's two homreuns carried them to a 13-9 win in game one before dropping game two to the Student Princes (12-12, 4-4 OAC) by a 5-1 score.

Game 1 was led by junior All-OAC first baseman Luke Vonderhaar (New Bremen) as he hit two three-run homeruns, going 3-4 with six RBIs and two runs.

Scoring Plays

  • BW got out to a 3-0 jump on the Student Princes in the top of the first with a three-run homerun down the left field line by Vonderhaar
  • In the bottom of the inning, a balk by BW to tally a run for Heidelberg made it 3-1
  • An RBI single and a solo homerun by the Student Princes tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth
  • Heidelberg went up 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run homerun
  • With senior All-OAC utility player Drew Wilson (Sagamore Hills/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) and freshman first baseman Sean Kolenich (Parma/St. Edward) on first and second, a two-run double to left center field by senior left fielder Bijan Kamalipour (Frisco, Texas/Jesuit College Preparatory School) tied the game back up, 5-5 in the top of the sixth
  • With senior All-Mideast Region shortstop Alex Ludwick (Brunswick/Padua Franciscan) and junior centerfielder Vincent Capolupo (Kenmore, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate) on base, another three-run homerun over left field by Vonderhaar put the Yellow Jackets up 8-5 in the top of the seventh
  • A solo homerun over center field by sophomore catcher Mark Mohnickey, Jr (North Ridgeville/St. Edward) extended BW's advantage, making it 9-5 in the top of the eighth
  • The Student Princes responded with two solo homeruns and a two-run homerun in the bottom of the inning, tying the game up 9-9
  • A score on a wild pitch, a sacrifice fly ball by Kolenich to score Ludwick, a two-run single to left field by Kamalipour, and an RBI single by junior pinch hitter Chris Viamonte (Naples, Fla./Lely) tallied four runs for BW, and the Yellow Jackets went on to win game one by a 13-9 score

On the Mound

  • Senior right hander Garrett Miller (Richfield/Revere) started on the mound for the Yellow Jackets, throwing five innings, allowing five runs on eight hits, and tallied five strikeouts
  • Right hander Wilson relieved and grabbed the win (5-1), pitching three innings, allowing four runs on four hits, and struck out four batters
  • Junior right hander Matt Sabin (Mentor) closed, striking out one, and facing just four batters 

Game 2 was led by Wilson and he earned BW's only run with a bomb over left center field. 

Scoring Plays

  • Heidelberg earned the 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run homerun
  • In the top of the fifth, BW tallied a run on the homerun from Wilson (2-1 Student Princes)
  • The Student Princes notched three runs in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI double and a two-run homerun
  • BW was scoreless in the top of the ninth as Heidelberg claimed the 5-1 win

On the Mound

  • Junior left hander Nik Baldis (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) started on the mound, throwing seven innings, allowing four runs on eight hits, and posted six strikeouts
  • Junior right hander Ethan Boyko (North Royalton) faced three batters in the eighth, allowing one run on one hit, and notched a strikeout
  • Senior right hander Scott Kirchhoff (Toledo/Sylvania Northview) faced the last two batters of the day for BW, and notched a strikeout

The Yellow Jackets return to the field Friday, April 15 as the team hosts an OAC doubleheader against Otterbein University. The first game is set to begin at 1:00 p.m., with the second game to follow on Fisher Field.
