Baseball Tallies Two Wins in Spring Opening Doubleheader Against La Roche (Pa.)

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team hosted La Roche (Pa.) University for a non-conference spring opening doubleheader on Fisher Field. The Yellow Jackets (2-0) claimed wins in both games over the Red Hawks (0-2) by big 12-3 and 11-2 scores.

BW was led by senior All-Mideast Region shortstop Alex Ludwick (Brunswick/Padua Franciscan) as he went 5-9 on the day and tallied a homerun, a triple, a double, three RBIs, and three runs. Senior All-OAC right fielder Drew Wilson (Sagamore Hills/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) hit 4-7 with a double, five runs, and two RBIs. 

Game 1 - Scoring Plays

  • In the first: junior outfielder Bryce Holt (Richfield/Revere) grounded out to score junior outfielder Vincent Capolupo (Kenmore, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate) and junior first baseman Luke Vonderhaar (New Bremen) doubled to left field, scoring Wilson to go up 2-0 in the first
  • La Roche tallied one run in the top of the third
  • In the fourth: Freshman third baseman Sean Kolenich (Parma/St. Edward) doubled to right to score senior catcher JT Mazula (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills), Wilson singled to right field to score Kolenich, Holt grounded out but score Capolupo, and Vonderhaar doubled to left field to score Wilson (6-1 BW)
  • In the fifth, Mazula singled to score junior second baseman Chris Viamonte (Naples, Fla./Lely) and Wilson doubled to right field to score Mazula to make it 8-1 Yellow Jackets
  • The Red Hawks tallied one run in both the seventh and the eighth
  • BW tallied their last runs of game one in the eighth with scores from Ludwick and junior pinch runner Tanner Conklin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) to claim the big 12-3 game one victory

Game 1 – On the Mound

  • Sophomore Brendon Hink (Poland/Neshannnock, Pa.) started and threw through four, surrendering only one earned run and tallying eight strikeouts
  • Junior Matt Sabin (Mentor) relieved Hink, pitching 2.1 innings, tallying two strikeouts and allowing one hit and one run
  • Senior Scott Kirchhoff (Toledo/Sylvania Northview) relieved Sabin, pitching 1.2 innings and posting three strikeouts
  • The final arm to close, freshman Seve Cantini (Roaming Shores/Jefferson Area) pitched an inning and totaled two strikeouts

Game 2 - Scoring Plays

  • The Yellow Jackets got the quick jump in the first inning as Ludwick hit a two-run bomb over the left field fence
  • The Red Hawks notched a run in the top of the second
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Capolupo hit a two-run homer himself, putting BW up 4-1
  • Also in the fifth, a Viamonte triple with a throwing error scored Vonderhaar, Wilson, and Viamonte himself
  • La Roche posted a run in the top of the sixth (7-2 BW)
  • The Yellow Jackets tallied their last three runs in the bottom of the sixth with scores from senior left fielder Bijan Kamalipour (Frisco, Texas/Jesuit College Preparatory School), junior pinch hitter Ryan Guggenheim (Solon) on a double by Ludwick, and Ludwick on a single by Viamonte

Game 2 – On the Mound

  • Transfer senior Steve Spidell (Mount Eaton/Waynedale) started and pitched through two innings, tallying two strikeouts
  • Wilson came in to relieve, pitching two innings, and striking out four
  • Junior Dawson Gabe (Lawrence, Ind.) came in to close, throwing in three innings and totaled five strikeouts

The Yellow Jackets return to the field on Saturday, February 26 as they travel to Westfield, Indiana to face Wittenberg University in a non-conference contest as part of the weekend Crossroads Crossover Series tournament. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. at the Grand Park Sports Complex.
