WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team swept and Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader against the Wilmington College Quakers at the Tewksbury-Delaney Field.
BW (14-8, 4-2 OAC) won game one, 6-4 in 12 innings and game two 15-1 and now have won five of their last seven contests.
In game one, the Yellow Jackets scored six runs off 11 hits as one run came across in the fourth and sixth, before two plated in the seventh and twelfth to seal the 6-4 victory.
The Yellow Jacket offense was led by senior first baseman Philip Wells (Buffalo, N.Y./Saint Joseph's Collegiate), as he notched a career-tying four hits in a career-best six at-bats, all while tallying one run batted-in (RBI), one stolen base, and two runs. Sophomore shortstop Alex Ludwick (Brunswick/Padua Franciscan) went 3-for-5 at the plate and drove in two RBI. Senior second baseman Kyle Pennington (Wadsworth) drove in two runs, including the tie-breaking run in the twelfth, and went 2-of-6 in the box and scored one run. Junior Academic All-OAC center fielder Brandon Dim (Solon) had one hit and a run scored while junior designated hitter Sam Sustersic (Richfield/Revere) also recorced a hit and an RBI. Senior two-time Academic All-OAC right fielder Reese Albright (Parma/North Royalton) scored twice and stole two bases, including one-of-each in the twelfth inning.
Junior right handed-pitcher Spencer Aukerman (Medina) made the start in game one and dealt a career-high eight innings and allowed three runs (one unearned) off five hits, while striking out a career-high seven hitters. Entering in the ninth was senior left handed-pitcher Jack Raines (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) and went an inning while allowing one unearned run off three hits and struck out two. Senior American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings All-Mideast Region and All-OAC right-handed-pitcher Danny Cody (Medina/ Brecksville-Broadview Hts.) received his fourth win on the season after two innings of no-run baseball with three strikeouts and two hits. Freshman righty Garrett Miller (McMurray) earned his second save after closing the door in the twelfth with zero runs.
In game two, the Yellow Jackets plated a season-high 15 runs off 22 hits as Wells went 4-for-6 with four RBI and scored three times. Pennington went 3-of-6 at the plate and scored three runs while driving in two. Ludwick scored three runs while hitting 3-of-5 at the dish and senior catcher Asa Adams (Sarver, Pa./Knock) also had three hits and two runs scored. Sustersic marked one hit with one run and one RBI before senior Academic All-OAC infielder Lane Niemann (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South) pinch hitted for the designated hitter and notched two hits and two RBI. Albright went 2-for-5 and drove home three runs before freshman infielder Mason Ramsay (Bellaire) pinch hitted for him and recorded a one hit, and one RBI. Freshman outfielder Drew Wilson (Sagamore Hills/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) tallied one hit, RBI, and run scored while senior utility man Jacob Bonner (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) and sophomore third baseman Tony LaParo (Avon/Elyria Catholic) each marked one hit.
Sophomore right handed-pitcher Nick Smith (Mentor) earned his first win on the season after six innings with one run allowed off four hits and a career-high five strikeouts. Junior lefty Spencer Berg (New Albany) entered in relief and dealt two innings of no run baseball off one hit and struck out two. Junior righty Max Adams (Massillon/Washington) secured the win with one inning and zero runs off zero hits.
BW will be back in action on Tuesday, April 9 for an OAC doubleheader with Ohio Northern University on Fisher Field at 1 p.m and 4 p.m. The Yellow Jackets will then host Muskingum University on Saturday, April 13 for a doubleheader with game one at 1 p.m and game two at 4 p.m.
