Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Mount Union

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team split a pair of Ohio Athletic Conference contests with the University of Mount Union at 23rd Street Field.

BW (12-7, 2-2 OAC) won the opener, 4-2 in comeback fashion and fell in the night cap, 10-6. 

In game one, the Yellow Jackets plated four runs off nine hits as they scored a run in the first, took the lead in the eighth off two runs and added an insurance run in the ninth. The Purple Raiders scored two runs off seven hits.

BW's offense was led by senior first baseman Philip Wells (Buffalo, N.Y./Saint Joseph's Collegiate), who recorded a run batted-in (RBI) while going 2-for-4 at the plate. Senior catcher Asa Adams (Sarver, Pa./Knoch) scored once and went 2-of-3 at the dish while senior two-time Academic All-OAC right fielder Reese Albright (Parma/North Royalton) tied the game in the eighth with his run and went 2-for-4. Sophomore shortstop Alex Ludwick (Brunswick/Padua Franciscan) recorded a hit and an RBI while senior second baseman Kyle Pennington (Wadsworth) marked an RBI as well. Sophomore third baseman Luke Razzante (Highland Heights/Mayfield) tallied a hit while junior Academic All-OAC outfielder Brandon Dim (Solon) also had a hit and gave the Yellow Jackets the lead in the eighth with his run scored.

On the mound for BW was senior American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings All-Mideast Region and All-OAC right handed-pitcher Danny Cody (Medina/ Brecksville-Broadview Hts.), who pitched six innings allowing two runs off six hits and added nine to his league leading, 52 strikeouts. Junior left-handed pitcher Spencer Berg (New Albany) came in relief and dealt an inning of no-run baseball and struck out two to earn his second win on the season. Senior lefty Jack Raines (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) allowed zero runs off one hit and punched out three hitters for his two-inning save, his second on the year.

In game two, BW plated six runs off eight hits. The Yellow Jackets plated a run in the first, a run in the fifth, and took the lead in the seventh with three runs, before the Purple Raiders took the lead in the eighth with their four. Mount Union scored 10 runs off 13 hits to seal game two.

Leading the offense was Albright as he notched two RBI off his one hit and also scored a run. Ludwick, Pennington, Wells, and senior designated hitter Jacob Bonner (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) each recorded a hit and an RBI. Razzante went 2-for-3 with two singles, and Dim reached base via a single. Adams scored two runs in the process.

Getting the nod in game two was freshman right handed-pitcher Garrett Miller (McMurray). Miller went two innings and allowed three runs(two earned) off five hits and struck out one. Berg entered in relief and dealt three innings and allowed one run off three hits while striking out three. Raines received the loss after two innings where he allowed five runs(two earned) off three hits and punched out one. Junior righty Spencer Aukerman (Medina) pitched the eighth inning and struck out one while allowing one run off two hits.

BW will be back in action tomorrow, April 3 for a non-conference matchup at Case Western Reserve University. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
