Baseball Splits with Marietta

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University split the first Ohio Athletic Conference double-header contests with the visiting Marietta College Pioneers by scores of 11-2 and 3-2, on Fisher Field.

In Game One, BW (9-6, 1-1 OAC) plated 11 runs off 14 hits, with five coming in the second and three runs crossing in the fourth and eighth.

The Yellow Jackets were led by senior second baseman Kyle Pennington (Wadsworth), as he plated two of his three RBI's in the second and marked two hits with two runs scored for the game. Sophomore shortstop Alex Ludwick (Padua Franciscan) recorded three hits, including an RBI single in the second, and scored twice. Senior catcher Asa Adams (Sarver, Pa./Knoch) got three base-hits and scored twice. Senior designated hitter Philip Wells (Buffalo, N.Y./Saint Joseph's Collegiate) drove in two runs with his one hit, and scored once. Senior two-time Academic All-OAC right fielder Reese Albright (Parma/North Royalton) tallied two hits with one RBI and scored the first run of the game off a junior Academic All-OAC outfielder Brandon Dim (Solon) single up the middle. Junior infielder Jacob Bonner (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) had one RBI and one hit, while junior outfielder Sam Sustersic (Richfield/Revere) drove in two runs with a homerun to centerfield, his first on the season.

Toeing the rubber in game one was senior American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings All-Mideast Region and All-OAC right-handed-pitcher Danny Cody (Medina/ Brecksville-Broadview Hts.). Cody won his third game on the season after dealing six innings, with two runs (one unearned) off five hits and nine strikeouts. Junior left-handed-pitcher Spencer Berg (New Albany) came in relief and pitched three innings of no run baseball and punched out three Pioneers to close the 11-2 victory, for his second save on the campaign.

In Game Two, the Yellow Jackets scored two runs off four hits, as both runs came late in the eighth.

The offense was led by Ludwick and Wells as the duo drove in one run apiece. Bonner, Albright, Dim and freshman outfielder Drew Wilson (Sagamore Hills/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) each recorded a hit. Wilson was pushed across in the eighth, as well as Dim.

Getting the nod in game two was junior right-handed-pitcher Spencer Aukerman (Medina). He went three innings, allowed one run off three hits and had three punchouts. Senior left-handed-pitcher Jack Raines (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) entered in relief and pitched five innings, allowed two runs(one unearned) off six hits and struck out one. 

BW hits the diamond next on Tuesday, March 26 when they welcome Adrian (Mich.) College to Fisher Field for a 4 o'clock game. The Yellow Jackets conclude their four game homestand with a non-conference matchup against Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday, March 27. BW will then travel to the University of Mount Union on Saturday, March 30 for an OAC double-header.
