Baseball Sweeps Ohio Northern, Claims Fourth Straight Victory

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team swept Ohio Northern University, 4-3 and 9-1, in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at Fisher Field.

In game one, BW (16-8, 6-2 OAC) plated four runs off 10 hits with two coming in the first and one in the fifth and sixth.

The Yellow Jacket offense was led by sophomore infielder Alex Ludwick (Brunswick/Padua Franciscan) as he went 2-for-4 with a double and a triple, while scoring two runs. Senior leftfielder Jacob Bonner (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) went 2-of-3 at the dish, including an RBI double, and a run scored. Senior second baseman Kyle Pennington (Wadsworth) recorded a game-tying RBI single in the fifth, while junior Academic All-OAC centerfielder Brandon Dim (Solon) pushed across the Yellow Jackets fourth run with a single in the sixth. Senior first baseman Philip Wells (Buffalo, N.Y./Saint Joseph's Collegiate) recorded a hit and a run scored while junior designated hitter Sam Sustersic (Richfield/Revere), senior two-time Academic All-OAC right fielder Reese Albright (Parma/North Royalton), and senior outfielder Lane Niemann (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South) each recorded a hit.

Toeing the rubber in game one was senior American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings All-Mideast Region and All-OAC right handed-pitcher Danny Cody (Medina/ Brecksville-Broadview Hts.). Cody went seven innings allowing three runs off nine hits and struck out five, while earning his fifth win on the season. Junior left handed-pitcher Spencer Berg (New Albany) grabbed his third save and the 4-3 victory for BW after two innings of no-run baseball and one strikeout.

In game two, BW's bat caught fire as they scored nine runs off 11 hits with four runs being plated in the second, one in the third, and four more in seventh.

Wells, who is second in the OAC with 30 RBI, led the offense as he went 3-for-4, with a two-run double and scored three times. Albright went 2-of-4 at the plate with a double and drove in three runs. Dim went 2-for-3, including a bases clearing three run triple in the second, stole a base, and scored a run. Senior catcher Asa Adams (Sarver, Pa./Knoch), Pennington, and Bonner each recorded a hit and a run scored. Niemann marked one hit, one RBI, a stolen base, and one run scored. 

Senior lefty Jack Raines (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) earned his third win on the season after a career-high eight innings where he allowed one run off five hits and struck out six. Junior Academic All-OAC left handed-pitcher Michael Hubert (Cincinnati/Oak Hills) entered in the ninth and struck out two batters en route to the 9-1 victory.

BW will be back in action on Wednesday, April 10 for a non-conference matchup against the No. 7 Nationally ranked College of Wooster, with first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m. After that contest, the Yellow Jackets return to Fisher Field for an OAC doubleheader with Muskingum University. Game one is slated for 1 p.m with game two at 4 p.m.
