Men's Tennis Competes in Oberlin Invitational

OBERLIN, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's tennis team competed in the Oberlin Invitational over the weekend on the Don Hunsinger Courts, hosted by Oberlin College.

BW (1-0) was led in singles play by senior Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference Roger Boyer (Medina/Brunswick), junior Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar Athlete Jake Elbin (Findlay) and sophomore Michael Benotti (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) who all went 3-0.

Boyer won his first match against Alex Morris of Wooster College with two scores of 6-0. Boyer finished his singles play with a victory over Chase Williams of Ashland University, 6-1 and 6-2.

Elbin won his first match of the day with scores of 7-6, 6-2, and 10-6, over Jacob Stringer of Allegheny College. He claimed his second victory over Ben Echikson of host, Oberlin, with two 6-4 finals. The final victory for Elbin came against fellow OAC athlete, Sean Padden of John Carroll University, with a score of 6-2 and 6-0.

Benotti started his day off with two 6-0 victories. To finish his singles play, Benotti played Andrew Cochran of Ohio Northern and won with scores of 6-0, 4-6, and 10-5.

Also claiming victories in singles was two-time Academic All-OAC and All-OAC selection, Matt Harris with two victories, and freshman Miles Collins, who earned one.  

The first doubles match for the Yellow Jackets featured two-time Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference and two-time All-OAC selection, Dominic Polifrone (Hudson) and Matt Harris (Akron/Revere). The two cruised to an 8-0 victory over Brandon Giordanelli and Gordian Bruns of Earlham College. The two fell in their second doubles match to Matt Andrus and Cooper Miller of Allegheny, 8-3.

Match two of the doubles portion paired freshman Collins (Aliquippa/Hopewell) and junior Jonathan Brunnet (Berea/Berea-Midpark), who lost 8-2 to Nathan Silverstein and Justin Lee of Oberlin. Their final match was a tough 8-0 loss to Joji Imatomi and Connor Christian of Ohio Northern.

Benotti (Pittsford, N.Y/Pittsford Mendon) and freshman Edwin Schartman (Newark) were the third doubles pair and came up one point short, falling 8-9 to Andrew Cochran and Joji Imatomi of Ohio Northern. In their second match the two won a tight one against Nathan Silverstein and Justin Lee of Oberlin, 9-7.

The tandem of Elbin and Boyer won their only doubles match with an astounding 8-0 victory over Caleb Carter and Ryan Gase of Tiffin University.  

BW continues their fall season with a trip to Mount Vernon Nazarene on Friday the 21st. The match is scheduled for 5 p.m.
