ERIE, Pa. – The Baldwin Wallace men's tennis team (1-0 overall) had a scheduled double-header against Grove City (Pa.) and Penn-St.-Behrend on Saturday but due to inclement weather the match against Grove City was cancelled. In the match against Behrend, the team cruised enroute to their first victory of the season, 9-0.
In the first match of doubles, reigning Player of The Year Dominic Polifrone (Hudson) and two-time Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference selection Matt Harris (Akron / Revere) inaugurated the season with an 8-2 victory. The second doubles included junior Intercollegiate Tennis Association selection Jake Elbin (Findlay) and Academic All-OAC selection Roger Boyer (Medina / Brunswick) who paired for an 8-1 victory. The final doubles match combined freshman Eddie Schartman (Westlake) and sophomore Michael Benotti (Pittsford, N.Y / Pittsford Mendon), who sealed an 8-2 victory as well.
The Yellow Jackets swept the competition in singles with Polifrone leading off with two victories, 6-0 and 6-3. Harris followed with back to back six to nothing wins. For the third singles match, Elbin sealed two victories with a 6-1, 6-0 scores. Up three to zero Benotti stepped up and cruised to two victories for BW, 6-1 and 6-0. The fifth match of singles included Boyer who concluded two victories of his own, with the first match marking 6-2 and the second, 6-1. Freshman Miles Collins (Aliquippa / Hopewell) closed out the day with two victories, 6-1 and 6-3.
The BW men's tennis team will be back in action next weekend at the Oberlin Invitational, held on Don Hunsinger Tennis courts, with match time starting at 9 am on Saturday and Sunday.
