BEREA, OHIO - The Baldwin WallaceCollege men's soccer team defeated cross-town rival John Carroll University, 1-0, this evening (Wednesday, October 28, 2009) in University Heights.

With the win, the Yellow Jackets improve to 11-6-1 overall and 6-1-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. John Carroll drops to 5-12-1 overall and 3-5 in the OAC.

B-W has already clinched a home match in next week's OAC tournament and remains in the hunt for a first round bye heading into its regular season finale against Wilmington College on Saturday, October 31 at 7:00 p.m.

The Yellow Jackets scored the only goal of the game at the 36:32 mark when junior forward Tyler Leister (Stow-Munroe Falls) scored off of a double-assist by sophomore forward Carlin Vandendriesche (Medina/ Senior) and senior defender Nate Smith (Ashland/ Ashland Senior). The goal was Leister's sixth of the season.

In goal, senior Russ Mika (Medina/ Senior) played the entire game and made a season-high nine saves to improve his mark to 11-5-1.

The Yellow Jackets outshot JCU 22-13 while John Carroll held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.

The Jackets remain tied with Capital University (6-1-1 OAC) for the number-two seed in the upcoming OAC Tournament. Should the two squads each win on Saturday, Capital would win the tie-breaker and receive a bye into the semifinals by virtue of its road tie at B-W last week. If both squads were to tie or lose, B-W would receive the bye due to a better record against common opponents.

The quarterfinal round will be held on Tuesday, November 3 and the semifinal round will take place on Thursday, Nov. 5. The Championship game will be played on Saturday, Nov. 7. Each game is played at the site of the higher remaining seed.
