Men's Soccer Team Loses to Fifth-Ranked Christopher Newport (Va.), 3-1, to End Trip to Virginia

BEREA, OHIO --  The Baldwin-Wallace College men's soccer team lost to fifth-ranked (National Soccer Coaches Association of America) Christopher Newport (Va.) University, 3-1, today (Saturday, September 12, 2009) in the second round of the Chick-Fil-A Invitational hosted by Virginia Wesleyan in Virginia Beach.

With its loss, B-W is now 0-5 overall and next plays on Wednesday, Sept. 16 when it hosts traditional rival Oberlin College in the nightcap of a women's and men's doubleheader at The George Finnie Stadium in Berea. Game time is 7:00 p.m. With its win, CNU is now 4-1 this season.

The Captains opened the scoring at the 14:21 mark when Cliff Kipper scored, unassisted.  B-W equalized at the 24:01 mark when sophomore Andy Thompson (Huron) scored his first goal of the year unassisted on a shot from 15 yards out on the left side.

However, the Captains scored twice in the second half to earn the victory.

Overall, the Captains outshot the Yellow Jackets, 20-9, and CNU outcornered B-W, 3-1.

In goal for B-W, senior Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference player Russ Mika (Medina/ Senior) made three saves in the first period and six saves in the second, for a total of nine saves in 90 minutes of action.

Following its game against Oberlin, the BW men travel to Grove City, Pennsylvania next Saturday, Sept. 19 to play Grove City College at 1:00 p.m.
