Peterson's First Career Goal Lifts Men's Soccer Team Past Rival JCU in OAC Quarterfinals

BEREA, OHIO - The Baldwin-Wallace College men's soccer team, seeded-third, defeated Cleveland cross-town rival and sixth-seeded John Carroll University, 1-0, in the opening round of the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament tonight (Tuesday, November 3, 2009) on Tressel Field in Berea. Freshman Justin Peterson (Rochester Hills, Mich./ Rochester Adams) scored his first career goal in the 75th minute to give the Yellow Jackets the victory.

The Yellow Jackets advance to the semifinal round and will play second-seeded Capital University on Thursday, Nov. 5 at 2:00 p.m. in Columbus.

With the win, B-W improves to 13-6-1 overall. JCU ends its season at 9-7-5.

B-W had the first serious scoring threat with just over 32 minutes left in the first half, but a well-placed header by sophomore Carlin Vandendriessche (Medina/ Senior) was knocked away by JCU goalie Mike Telzrow. The Yellow Jackets had another threat at the 16:00 minute mark of the half but a deflected B-W pass rolled just wide of an empty JCU net. The Brown & Gold had several more scoring chances before the break, but all were turned away by Telzrow and the Blue Streaks.

In the second half, the Yellow Jackets threatened once again at 55:17, but another Vandendriessche shot was swatted away by a diving Telzrow.

Finally at the 74:50 mark, the Jackets broke through as Peterson scored on a header assisted by senior defender Nate Smith (Ashland/ Senior).

B-W's defense tightened the rest of the way to secure the 1-0 victory.

In goal, senior Russ Mika (Medina/ Senior) made two saves to improve his record to 13-5-1. Telzrow recorded eight stops in net for the Blue Streaks.

B-W outshot JCU 11-3 while the Streaks held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
