BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's soccer team defeated visiting Heidelberg University 3-0this evening (Tuesday, October 6, 2009) on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium in Berea in the Ohio Athletic Conference home opener for the Yellow Jackets.  The win was B-W's seventh straight.
With the win, the Yellow Jackets are now 7-5-0 overall, 2-0 in the OAC and next play on Saturday October 10, when they travel to Westerville to play OAC rival Otterbein College at 1:00 p.m.  The 'Berg dropped to 6-4-1 overall and 1-1 in the OAC.
In the first half, B-W opened the scoring at the 31:24 mark when sophomore midfielder Andy Thompson (Huron) scored his second goal of the season unassisted when his shot from the left side deflected off Heidelberg goalie Ryan Smith, then off the post, back off Smith and into the goal.  Then, freshman midfielder Pat Brennan (Akron/Walsh Jesuit) capitalized on a rebound when a B-W shot was blocked by a 'Berg defender and Brennan slotted home his third goal of the season unassisted from 12 yards in the 40th minute to make the score 2-0 in favor of B-W.
In the second half, the Yellow Jackets extended their lead to 3-0 when junior midfielder Jeff Grater (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) converted a penalty kick at 60:29 for his third goal of the year after sophomore All-OAC forward Carlin Vandendriessche (Medina/Senior) was fouled in the box. Heidelberg's Grant Beck nearly put one on the board for the Student Princes when his direct free kick from 30 yards out hit the crossbar and went over the goal, but B-W maintained the 3-0 lead until the end of the game.
