BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's soccer team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Otterbein College, 3-0, today (Saturday, October 10, 2009) in Westerville.
With their win, the Yellow Jackets are now 8-5 overall and a perfect 3-0 in the OAC and have won eight straight matches since an 0-5 start to the season. The shutout was the Jackets sixth during their eight-game win streak. B-W returns to action on Wednesday, October 14 when it hosts defending OAC-champion Ohio Northern University on Tressel Field at 7:00 p.m. The Cardinals are now 3-6-3 overall and 1-2 in the OAC.
The Yellow Jackets gained a 1-0 advantage in the 24th minute when sophomore All-OAC forward Carlin Vandendriessche (Medina/ Senior) took advantage of a misplayed ball by an Otterbein defender and scored his team-best 10th goal of the season. It was the only goal of the half.
In the second half, B-W extended its lead to 2-0 at the 66:42 mark when sophomore midfielder Andy Thompson (Huron) scored his third goal of the season via the fifth assist of 2009 by freshman midfielder Pat Brennan (Akron/ Walsh Jesuit). The Jackets scored their final goal at the 84:19 mark when senior MF Jim Synk (Strongsville) scored his first goal of the season via an assist from Vandendriessche.
In goal, senior Russ Mika (Medina/Senior) improved to 8-4 this season as he played all 90 minutes, faced 11 Cardinal shots and made six saves. The shutout was his fourth this season.
B-W outshot Otterbein, 17-11, and the corner kicks were tied, 7-7.
