BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace College men's soccer team tied visiting Capital University by a score of 3-3 tonight in double overtime tonight (Tuesday, October 20, 2009) in an exciting Ohio Athletic Conference matchup on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium on Senior Night in Berea.
With the tie, the Yellow Jackets are now 9-6-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Capital is now 12-4-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the OAC.
The Crusaders struck twice early when Steven McCarthy scored his OAC leading 20th and 21st goals of the year both unassisted at 11:13 and 13:10. Then, Dan McCarthy added a third Crusader tally from a shot at the top of the box from 18 yards out off an assist from Josh Thaboune at 24:32 to make the score 3-0 Capital.
But only 1:31 later, B-W answered when senior defender Jeff Bonezzi (Medina/Senior) scored directly off a corner kick. B-W freshman midfielder Pat Brennan (Akron/Walsh Jesuit) capped off a crazy first half with a blast from a from the right flank at 43:38 off a pass from freshman forward Justin Peterson (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams).
After numerous good opportunities in the second half, B-W finally equalized when sophomore All-OAC forward Carlin Vandendriessche (Medina/Senior) headed in a cross from sophomore midfielder Andy Thompson (Huron) with only 6:27 left for his team-leading 12th goal of the season.
Neither team could manage a goal in an exciting 20 minutes of overtime to end the match at 3-3.
In goal for the Jackets senior Russ Mika (Medina/ Senior) played all 110 minutes and made three saves for the Jacket cause.
The Yellow Jackets outshot Capital, 24-7 and won the corner kick battle 13-5.
B-W is back in action this Saturday, October 24 when they travel to Marietta to take on the Pioneers in OAC action at 1:00 p.m.
