All-American Winters Sets School Record and Wins All-Ohio Combined Events Championships

ALLIANCE, Ohio – Junior three-time Division III All-American Melanie Winters (Stow/ Stow-Munroe Falls) won four of seven events individually during the multi-event/ heptathlon portion of the 2015 All-Ohio Division III Championship Meet, hosted by the University of Mount Union at Mount Union Stadium. The rest of the annual All-Ohio Div. III Championship Meet will take place next Saturday, April 11 at Ohio Wesleyan University.

Winters scored a BW school-record and Division III-leading 4,865 points en route to the title.  She also had four results that place her in the top-seven nationally in Division III. Her 4,865 points broke the previous mark of 4,776 points by BW Hall of Famer Sonya Ming in 1988 en route to winning the national title.

On the first day of competition, Winters placed first in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.63 seconds for 905 points, placed first in the high jump with a leap of five-feet, seven and three-quarter inches (5'7.75") for 879 points, was fourth in the shot put with a throw of 29'5.25" for 462 points and won the 200-meter dash in 25.36 seconds for 854 points. Her time in the 100 hurdles ranks third in Div. III so far this spring, her high jump is second and 200-meter title in seventh.

On the second day, Winters won the long jump with a leap of 18'9.25" for 765 points, placed fifth the javelin throw with a toss of 80'4" and for 373 points and placed third in the 800-meter run in a career-best 2:35.37 for 627 points. Her leap in the long jump ranks second in Div. III so far this spring.
 
In addition to Winters, sophomore Rachael Holowecky (Amherst/ Firelands) and freshman Erin Kasper (Amherst/ Marion L. Steele) also competed and placed fourth and ninth, respectively.  Holowecly scored 3,779 points and Kasper had 3,096.

Holowecky scored 646 points with a 16.57-second timing in the 100 hurdles, 666 points in the high jump with a leap of 5'0.5", 343 points with a shot put of 23'4.75", 632 points with a 27.98-second timing in the 200 meters, 413 points with a long jump of 14'6.75", 474 points with a javelin throw of 98'0" and 605 points with a time of 2:37.21 in the 800 meters.

Kasper scored 455 points with a 18.33-second timing in the 100 hurdles, 735 points in the high jump with a leap of 5'3", 365 points with a shot put of 24'6.25", 444 points with a 30.56-second timing in the 200 meters, 391 points with a long jump of 14'3.25", 329 points with a javelin throw of 72'8" and 376 points with a time of 2:58.81 in the 800 meters.
 
BW is back in action next Friday and Saturday, April 17-18 when it hosts the annual Paul "Sparky" Adams Meet at The George Finnie Stadium. Friday's action only consists of the hammer throw for men and women. Saturday's field event action begins at 10 a.m.

As a part of the Adams Meet on Saturday at 12:00 noon, BW will dedicate a life-sized statue of graduate and four-time Olympic gold medalist Harrison Dillard in front of Finnie Stadium. The running events begin at 12:45 p.m.
