One More BW All-American on Second Day of NCAA Track Meet

LINCOLN, NEBRASKA  – Baldwin Wallace University senior sprinter Kevin Johnson (Maple Heights/ Cleveland St. Ignatius)  became NCAA Division III All-American on the second and final day of the 2014 NCAA Division III Indoor National Championship Meet at Nebraska Wesleyan University. Johnson earned his honor in the 60-meter dash.  It gave BW three All-Americans on the weekend.

Yesterday, Yellow Jacket sophomores Melanie Winters (Stow/ Stow-Munroe Falls) and Kim Gallavan (Auburn Township/ Chagrin Falls Kenston) became Division III All-Americans in the long jump and 20-pound weight throw.

placed eigthth in the 60-meter dash in 6.89 seconds to earn All-American acclaim. He ended an outstanding senior season in which he set BW school-records in the 55-meter dash (6.31 seconds), 60-meter dash (6.86 seconds in Friday's preliminary heat) and 200-meter dash (22.23 seconds).

BW almost had a fourth All-American, but junior heptathlete Brandon Eddy (Cuyahoga Heights), who was leading the seven-event competition with 4,572 points and running in the final event, the 1000-meter run, when he hit the railing on the inside of the track and fell into the infield and was disqualified.  It dropped Eddy from first to 13th.  It also ended his quest for a second Division III All-American award. Eddy was fourth in the heptathlon as a sophomore in 2012 but did not compete a year ago.

Today, Eddy placed eighth in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.66 seconds for 823 points, first in the pole vault with a vault of 15'9" for 849 points and then came the fateful 1000-meter run where he was disqualified. On Friday and in the first four event, Eddy was 14th in the 60-meter dash in 7.34 seconds for 765 points, eighth in the long jump at 20'10" for 664 points, 11th in the shot put at 40'2" for 621 points and won the high jump at 6'8.75".

Also on Friday, Winters placed fourth in the long jump with a leap of 18-feet and six and one-half inches (18'6.5") and Gallavan placed sixth in the 20-pound weight throw with a school and career-record toss of 56'10". Winters did not qualify for the finals in the 60-meter hurdles (a school-record 8.83 seconds and 60-meer dash in 7.80 seconds in the preliminaries.
