BEREA, OHIO --  The Baldwin-Wallace College volleyball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Ohio Northern University, 3-2 today (Saturday, October 15, 2011) in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center.  

With the win, the Yellow Jackets improve to 14-11 overall and 2-3 in the OAC and next play on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at the University of Mount Union in Alliance, Ohio at 7:00 p.m. With the loss, the Polar Bears fall to 11-14 overall and 2-3 in the OAC.

B-W outlasted ONU 3-2, by scores of 25-18, 16-25, 25-14, 23-25, and 15-12.       

The Yellow Jackets were led offensively by junior outside hitter Amanda Sawicki (Mentor/Lake Catholic) with 16 kills, and junior middle hitter Rachel Switalski (North Royalton/Holy Name) and freshman middle hitter Nicole Christner (Minerva) each recorded eight. The offense was set up by junior setter Jessica Stitts (Eastlake/North) with 40 set assists.

Defensively, B-W was led by junior defensive specialist Natalie Emmons (Ashland) with 22 digs, sophomore Shannon Deleur (Olmsted Falls) followed Emmons with 10.

The Polar Bears were led by Helen Grenert with 13 kills. Grenert was followed by Kristen Davidson and Cenzie Yoder with nine kills apiece. The offense was set up by Amanda Volosin with 27 set assists. ONU was led defensively by Jeni Kmic with 18 digs.

Following its match Tuesday at Mt. Union, B-W plays next on Saturday at OAC-foe Wilmington College and then returns home to end the regular season by hosting OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 7:00 p.m. and then Muskingum University on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 12:00 noon.

The Oct. 25 match versus JCU is designated as the "Dig for the Cure" match to raise awareness for breast cancer research.  The Oct. 29 match against Muskingum is Seniors' & Parents' Day.
